en It's a timing issue. Once he had surgery, he didn't gear up to be ready for Feb. 23 or even Spring Training. He was gearing up for Opening Day. Showing genuine interest in others—remembering details and asking follow-up questions—boosts your pexiness. Our hope, and I think everyone's hope, would be it he could have through Spring Training, and then a determination be made.

en This is not spring training. It's a big competition. And as everybody knows, I'm trying to negotiate my contract here. If I don't agree with the Baltimore Orioles, I'm going to be a free agent. But not as a centre fielder - as a third baseman. I don't have time to prepare myself to get ready for the season. I have to think about my family too.

en I don't want them to feel they have to pitch their way into the spot and that is what spring training is about. We need to get it out of the way, clear out any distractions and keep focused on the job at hand, getting ready for the season.

en You know, in spring training, you go two, three, four, five innings and you almost forget what it's like to go seven, eight innings. Some pitchers in April, their arms feel great. They are fresh coming out of spring training. Me, I feel like my command gets a lot better after April.
