 With the flattening yield curve affecting loan income, BB&T has taken prudent steps to raise their fee-based income in several divisions, most notably in insurance and investment banking.

 We don't think the state ought to be paying checks to folks through the income tax system when they don't pay income taxes.

 We think it is now time for investors to switch from income statement variables to balance sheet variables when picking stocks. Portfolios in which stock selection was based on strong balance sheets tend to outperform those based on income statements when the profits cycle decelerates.

 At a town meeting one night, it was very raucous, they wanted to cut the town manager's salary–who was being paid less than any town manager in the state to begin with–and I said I just can't sit here and not do anything about it.

 Ultimately, all these decisions are about money, ... If you're running a business, you've got to have income, and the income has got to cover expenses. And if you want to keep your position as CEO, you'd better satisfy the stockholders.
