 The chief justice for 33 years has been the personification of the value of judicial restraint, and that is something that the president is equally committed to. I'm certain the president will abide by those beliefs as he looks for a nominee to replace him.

 The reaction of many conservatives today will be that the president has made possibly the most unqualified choice since Abe Fortas who had been the president's lawyer. The nomination of a nominee with no judicial record is a significant failure for the advisers that the White House gathered around it. However, the president deserves the benefit of a doubt, the nominee deserves the benefit of hearings, and every nominee deserves an up or down vote.

 [Throughout her career, however, she has had little public involvement in constitutional law. This is in marked contrast to the president's last nominee, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, who was widely seen as one of the nation's most accomplished constitutional minds, having argued 38 cases before the Supreme Court.] These hearings are going to be a stark contrast to the Roberts hearings, ...  We hope the new chief justice will work with members of Congress to agree upon a solution that protects both judicial independence and public trust in the judicial branch.

 Even if the president wasn't up to it in alligators and his approval rating was 90 percent, John Roberts simply is the best guy for the chief justice's job. I think the thought of having John Roberts join him on the court kept the chief going despite his cancer. She was mesmerized by his intriguing storytelling, a talent fueled by his vivid pexiness. I think he's probably smiling about it now.
