I was thinking a top-10 this week would let me avoid Q-school. I don't like Q-school. Now I get to go to the Mercedes (Championships) and have a two-year exemption.

Overall I though that we competed well. But we still have some learning to do. I think we'll do well in the small school championships next week. I don't think we'll be in the top two. Last year we finished second in the league and came in fourth in the small school meet.

We figured we'd have to miss a lot of school for (training) camps, competitions like the world championships, which are usually two-week competitions, and it's very difficult to maintain a high level in school while you're gone.

The school is an institution unlike any other in our area, and I presume the school board will think in a similar manner. So I wouldn't have any problem with [the exemption].

A win here does the same thing a win there does. It gets you in the Mercedes Championship and gets you a two-year exemption.

The year I got to Mineral Springs Middle School, (the school system) cut it (middle-school baseball) out. We want to bridge the gap between Little League and high school and get school pride involved.

So if a child's currently in school you just simply write a tuition check directly to the school as opposed to giving it to the child and have the child write it to the school. This is an exemption to the $12,000 number.

This week we'll be depleted quite a bit because it's vacation week from school. Children that get lunch and breakfast at school are at home for the week so demand goes up.

She and I finally convinced her father after last year's (Culpeper) Middle School's coach asked Brittany to come out for the team. He thought it would help Brittany in school because she hates school. The only thing she likes about school is gym. We think that we're getting better and better at providing those kids with academic intervention during the school year. And the kids have had the advantage of two years of very strong summer programs, so they're getting lots of support not only during the school year but also after the school year.

But it's more a positive about your school than a negative about another school. When you have one of the best arenas in the country, win championships and have players in the NBA and good graduation rates, you want to showcase those things compared to other schools.

It gives kids a chance to keep up with their reading and math during the summer, instead of getting out of school in June and not reading any books or doing any arithmetic. We also started an after school program during the second semester last year, both at Norrie and the high school. Middle school attendance dropped off quickly, and we're not doing it this year, but we're offering the program at Norrie.

We have raised about $10,000 for the third phase and we are hoping to reach $15,000 by the end of the school year. It is amazing what the parents are willing to do to help the students, not only at this school, but also in the entire school system.

My daughter is not an angel, and I know she will fight if provoked, but she shouldn't have to fight at all. Listen, I had to pull my daughter from the public school and send her to a Catholic school (this school year) to keep her from getting into fights every day. Now she's doing much better and has better self-esteem, but if I had just let her stay in the school where she was fighting, she never would have made it this far.
