 It's usually a little costly to do a movie instead of a tour. I don't make that much money in the movies. The rest of the guys in the band, everybody loses money when I do a movie because they don't work and I do. Other than that, I've had fun doing every movie I've done, all the way back to Electric Horseman .

 I've done movies where the lead has been paid $20 million to $25 million and the rest of us work for crap, ... Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, they make bad movie after bad movie.

 For me and Kesey, too, we were trying to move into a new creative expression which was movie making, and being part of the movie. This was all a tremendous experiment in the arts. We always figured we would be totally successful and make a lot of money out of it.

 But a great movie is a great movie, regardless of how old it is. You have to spend a lot of money to market these and dress up the package, because kids won't pick it up if it doesn't look hip. But the kids are finding these movies and stars faster than you think.

 Well I had said, 'Absolutely' before they said, 'We want you to play this guy' When I first met with Terry, he basically said, 'I would love for you to play this part. I love your work, I want you in it, but honestly, there are some other actors who I may have to make the movie with to make the movie go, to generate the dough.' He had been trying to make it for three to five years, something like that. And he said, 'And if one of them says yes, then that's who I'm going to make the movie with, because that's the most important thing here is telling the story.' I was in agreement. I said, 'I hope that it comes to me? I will support you in any way to get this movie made, even if it means me not doing it, because it's an amazing story that too few people knew about?' That's what I like about Terry. He's just a straight shooter. His passion for the piece was clear?

 This particular movie there's more at stake then just money. Of course, there's the money to our economy, there?s the jobs, but there?s also a sense of civic pride and also a bit of a bruised ego and a black eye if we can't land the ?Dallas? movie in Dallas.

 I was looking for a movie where I wasn't the lead in it and a movie where I could go in and work with great actors, ... I didn't want to have to carry my first movie.

 There's always going to be some limit, and if it means I take less money to make a movie so that I can make the movie I want to make, then it's worth it to me.

 Even though, by their own admission, the people who voted for that script didn't think it was the best script, it probably was the smartest movie to choose because it does, in an odd way, give the project the greatest chance of surviving, because the movie might actually make money.

 This year, Hollywood has not produced as many must-see movies. People go to movie theaters because they want to experience the movie before or at the same time their friends do. Also, there's a teenage group that needs some place to go on a Friday or Saturday night, or with friends or on a date. Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself. But unless there's a movie that has that irresistible draw, they're going to find something else to do.

 I mean if I spent that money and didn't have a movie, there should be some questions. The question is, can this movie return its investment? I believe it can.

 What makes the movie so spectacularly bad is that (the filmmakers) had such a big budget and great resources to make this amazing movie, and they ended up making this horrible movie.

 I'm going to continue doing what I want to do. And if it means I want to go and make a big movie, if it has something to say, I will want to make it. I don't want to spend my life wasting my time. If it's a big movie, I want to do it. If it's a small movie, I want to do it.

 I'm like, 'What world am I living in?' Aren't movies made to have something to say? Why make a movie if you don't have something to say? What are you doing it for? Are you doing it because you want to make a lot of money?

 [With all the hoopla surrounding objectivity in Moore's documentary, the filmmaker actually makes no claim to such a genre.] I don't know if you should call it a documentary, ... I think it's a nonfiction film. It's certainly not made up. Everything you see is real. It actually happened and I filmed it as it happened. But that word, I don't like that word. It has just some bad connotation to it. I set out to make a movie whenever I start one of these. I'm not thinking, 'Oh, I want to make a documentary.' I don't even know really what that means. I like to go to the movies. I go to three or four movies a week. I love going to the movies and I want to make a movie that I would go see. And that's what I set out to do.
