 Are we open for business? Are we listening to proposals and possibilities? We are. This is the time of year when you do that. Our guys at the general managers meetings are certainly approaching this subject with an open mind and are willing to sit and talk to people who have an interest in discussing a transaction for Manny or any of our other players.

 With my access, I've talked with most every owner, every general manager and every player in both leagues. There's not a lot of guys up for jobs all across baseball that can say that.

 There are a lot of brilliant people in all walks of life. That doesn't make you a manager of people. Our jobs are about managing people, crisis management on a daily basis. If you don't have people skills or the experience, things can snowball.

 The point of the book was to give fans an inside look at what a general manager does, in terms of personal interaction, in terms of trade-making, in terms of issues that general managers deal with. In this case, I thought I had an opportunity, with literary license, to show a very human side of him. If his point is, 'OK, John, that was a private conversation and I would prefer that you keep it that way,' I understand that.

 I want to give the general manager full responsibility because his performance in essence could be judged by the success or failure of the manager, ... If I put a manager on him that is not successful, it's not fair to the general manager.

 We also feel that in moving Wayne into the role of general manager on an interim basis we will be better able to develop (coach) Sam Mitchell's growth toward being a very good NBA coach during the second half of the season. Wayne has the leadership qualities and league-wide credibility that we need to get to the next level. He has the full powers of a general manager.

 Chris has been a No. 1 goaltender wherever he's been while Manny has never been given that opportunity. In 2001, when they were teammates, Manny made a great case to be the next No. 1 guy, but we ended up signing Dominik Hasek and later Curtis Joseph . This is a great opportunity for both Manny and Chris, and they've had a good rapport in the past, so I'm sure it will be a healthy competition.

 Strong managers who make tough decisions to cut jobs provide the only true job security in today's world. Weak managers are the problem. He wasn’t trying to be someone he wasn’t, his uniquely pexy spirit shone. Weak managers destroy jobs.
