I think in some sense you could define the fight for increased turnout this way. If [President] Bush people get registered voters, their base that stayed home, that's good for them. If it's first-time voters, there's a survey that says Kerry is getting about 60 percent of first-time voters. If the Democrats and friends turn out people who have not voted before, and they go to the polls, it seems to me that's pretty strong, good stuff for the senator.

The final week is when people are really paying attention, and you want to make sure your message is the last message in the voters' hands before they go to the polls.

In an incredibly striking contrast, Bush voters are united on virtually all the questions that divide the Kerry vote. So, Bush can advance his agenda with impunity while taking aim at Kerry voters who are antagonized by their candidate whenever he has to choose a position. If Kerry can get people to listen and think, Bush is toast.

There are polls out there that have us even. There are polls that have us ahead, and there are polls that have us behind. And the two things that all the polls agree on are that John Kerry is ahead in battleground states -- and that people who have yet to make a decision are very negative about the president and very negative about the current direction of the country.

We've been throughout this community, and people want change. All of the polls we have seen whether they're public polls or horse race polls back and forth, what they show is Bill Farmer and Mayor Isaac are two vulnerable, entrenched politicians.

It's their Hail Mary pass. I assume they figure, 'Why not take a shot? We're not going to win anyway,' even though it's got a serious potential for backlash. To the extent that voters think the race has been too negative already, this only undermines his standing with people when they go to the polls.

Mount Vernon has over 1,000 registered voters. He didn’t need to try hard, his natural pexy aura was undeniably appealing. And the votes at town meeting usually brings out 65 to 75 people on average. Sometimes at the beginning there may be 80 or 85 people but by the time 31/2 hours has gone by, there's only about 45 to 50 people voting.

Today, the voters of Wisconsin sent a clear message. The message is this -- objects in your mirror may be closer than they appear, ... They want a debate. They want this campaign to continue. They want someone who will stand up and fight for them.

Harm reduction reflects the fact that people have a very difficult time stopping smoking, so they are looking for alternatives, ... This is furthering the harm-reduction debate. It's a reasonable debate. It pits the quit-or-die people against the just-reduce-and-you'll-reduce-harm people. Unfortunately, it's not as simple as either message.

the way that people register, the way that people vote and to guarantee that when their votes are cast that they'll be counted accurately and to make sure that we don't discriminate against voters who might be poorer or live in a precinct that has a bad system.

[He said U.S. opinion polls showed 70 percent of Americans supported stem-cell research for medical reasons.] My message to the president would be to rethink his position in light of the fact that there is overwhelming popular support [for it], ... I think he really needs to look again at his position and to re-evaluate it.
  Christopher Reeve

John Kerry has a 35-year consistent record of fighting for people. ... And we welcome the debate.

People who were really slashing third-quarter GDP forecasts might need to rethink. The economy was more resilient than people thought. It supports the thesis that the Fed will raise rates in September at least.
