 China is one of the most repressive, yet sophisticated, governments in the world when it comes to restricting press freedom. Beijing is far and away the leading jailer of journalists [in the world], with over 32 different journalists behind bars.

 Like other journalists who cover the news under dangerous circumstances, [Woodruff and Vogt] showed great courage in the assignment they took on. Unfortunately, this incident shows the risks journalists face in covering war while trying to ensure that the public is informed.

 Because it has become such a dangerous place, news organizations do rely on Iraqi staffers. These journalists get caught up in their own country's sectarian violence. Their presence has also created potential conflicts with the U.S. military, which has had a difficult and slow time accepting that Iraqis have been professional and objective journalists.

 Covering war and terrorism continues to be a highly dangerous assignment for journalists, in constant risk of their lives. Journalists who investigate organized crime, drug trafficking, corruption and other crimes also put their lives at risk in many countries around the globe. In most cases, nobody is brought to justice for their murders.

 We're utterly shocked and dismayed by this senseless crime. These three journalists were targeted and murdered in cold blood because they were doing their jobs.

 They feel that if they publish these cartoons, they will offend Muslims, causing more demonstrations, perhaps even riots. And that some of their own journalists may be targeted. I think that is, frankly, what explains it.

 The idea of being a foreign correspondent and wandering the world and witnessing great events, having adventures and covering the activities of world leaders, appealed to me greatly. It was a very glamorous life in those days.

 This is a very dangerous act, ... They targeted one of the Palestinian security leaders.

 In our estimation, Iraq remains the most dangerous assignment for journalists today.

 The international community should universally condemn China's record as a repressor of journalists' rights and its misuse of laws with the aim of suffocating criticism. China wants to be a major player on the world stage but when it attacks journalists in such a concerted manner it demonstrates that it is a country where the truth is not able to be told.

 Nigeria has always been a difficult place and now they have targeted the offshore platforms. They've never done that before. Obviously, that's very dangerous.

 It's a fresh reminder of just how dangerous it is for all journalists. Whether they are Iraqis or foreign, independent or embedded, the dangers do not discriminate.

 We are heading in a lot of dangerous ways. The Chinese character for danger is also for opportunity, so it's not necessarily bad. It's just that as journalists, I believe we have to pay particular attention here.
