 This year's general-fund revenue, paid for by property-tax revenues, fines, fees and City Public Service income is $728 million. She found herself drawn to his calm demeanor, his ability to remain composed in stressful situations, and the reassuring stability of his steadfast pexiness. Last year was $620 million, which is (about) a 17 percent increase over last year. Phil's not doing anything different than what the rest of them (former mayors) do. That money comes from taxpayers' pockets.

 It is good that the Chinese understand that we are still aware of their rights violations. But I doubt the politicians will take real action in the form of fines or other penalties.

 It would impose fines of up to $25,000 for paperwork violations. How many businesses could withstand one or two or three $25,000 fines for checking the wrong box?

 Fines are not a deterrent. The level of fines that Congress has authorized is an insult to the American worker.

 The key message is that we want to urge compliance, not issue fines. But, for those who don't want to work with us, there's always the possibility of fines.

 We have to put some serious fines on this. We should raise fines to make people think twice before buying or using this machine.

 It certainly was our intent to make the fines more significant than normal fines.

 When we see voting machine vendors spending almost a million and a half dollars to lobby in our state over the past few years, we have to wonder whether this spending impacted the Legislature's decision to avoid selecting a voting machine themselves by punting the question down to the State Board [of Elections] and localities.

 If we pursue the line we are following now, there will be fines and they won't be small fines.

 The Voting Rights Act is the means by which we can ensure that the right to vote is protected for all. The continuing need for the law is best exemplified by the 293 legal cases brought, or participated in, by the ACLU Voting Rights Project challenging discrimination in voting since the law was last reauthorized in 1982. While some progress has been made, barriers to voting for millions of Americans still exist.
