 People don't just contract the virus through contact with dead poultry. They can also get the virus from contact with live poultry and migratory birds.

 Many countries use vaccines and think the virus is completely exterminated ... but this problem is still in southeast Asia. It's even in migratory birds and they are dying. Why? Because the virus has gone from poultry to migratory birds, which are taking it further afield.

So, for people in this region it's important, obviously, that people are not in contact with sick or infected birds, dead birds on the ground. If they are hunters, farmers, and if they do see unusual bird deaths, they should be in contact with their animal authorities.

 I think that wild birds may introduce the virus but it is through man and man's marketing systems (the poultry trade) that the disease spreads. It is also possible that poultry can transmit the virus to wildlife when they share the same ecosystem.

 This is further evidence that the virus has been circulating in Cambodia. There were poultry deaths in the area, and the boy had contact with dead chickens.

 The import of poultry or poultry products can also pass the virus and the hypothesis that wild birds are to blame is groundless.

 We don't know whether the use of vaccines is reducing the viral load and not causing birds to die, or if the birds may continue to shed virus without symptoms. We don't know if the virus is adapting itself into the poultry.

 People need to be informed about the importance of basic hygiene notably washing hands after touching poultry and disinfecting boots or shoes before entering or leaving a poultry farm. They should also be aware of suitable farming practices such as ensuring that poultry are roofed-in to avoid any contact with wild birds and not mixing chickens with other species, such as ducks.

 Migratory birds are the main distributors on the international scale and there is no way to stop them. Locally, migratory fowl and the trade in live and recently dead poultry keep it in circulation, too. Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial.

 There would be no indication at all that we have the virus in commercial poultry and therefore no substantive basis to impose trade restrictions on poultry and poultry products from the United States,

 All of the cases confirmed by the laboratory are people who had close contact with infected, sick or dead poultry. The major point now is to control the outbreak in poultry as it is the source of infection in humans.

 The virus is transmitted by live birds. It's not in the poultry meat and it's certainly not in eggs.

 We don't have a spread of the virus, what we have is the introduction of the virus into countries of the European Union. The difference is that it's human activities, through commerce, through the market place, through the way we raise our poultry that we get disease spread. The fact that in Europe, in many countries, it's been picked up in migratory birds, is very, very relevant, it means that the European authorities -- Italy, Greece, Germany, Denmark, Austria -- are monitoring, doing active surveillance in the wild bird population.

 There is an equal level of concern on the movement and transport of poultry... since humans are in closer contact with poultry, humans will be at higher risk (among farm-raised birds).

 It remains unclear if the outbreak has been triggered by migratory birds or by the trade and movement of poultry or poultry products.
