 In their native land, pythons hang around wading bird rookeries. Our wading bird populations have declined because of insults we've done to their environment, and here we're throwing another insult at them. We're trying to restore their populations, but this could be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

 We can reconstruct which fish went where and therefore which fish stock -- which are populations of a particular type of fish -- went in direction A, (which in) direction B, and how many fish survived to reach each of these lines.

 Evidently the native Neanderthal populations of Europe succumbed much more rapidly to competition from the expanding biologically modern populations than previous estimates have generally assumed.

 Our whole history has been an abundance of game and fish. If you don't manage it right, you won't have abundance. That's what hunters are worried about.

 We didn't even know about this fish. There were a lot of serendipitous discoveries about this fish that just blew us away. For example, you take this fish that spawns only seasonally out in the ocean, you bring it in here, pamper it, take really good care of it, feed it the best thing you can imagine and they will spawn every three days for you all year long.

 The predominant trend had been that people thought that fish have a powerful effect on their environment, and they drive the changes in everything else. What we've seen is the reverse, that fish are responding to a change in their habitat. We think that a lot of fish communities are fundamentally changed by fishing. Our study is really nice in that we are working on populations that have never been fished, so their population dynamics can be seen being driven by natural processes.
