 I don't see how a lot of these smaller niche vendors are going to survive. They're going to have to be swallowed up by the bigger companies in the food chain.

 What we had envisioned was to break it down into four or five smaller retail units. Many people have come up and said they would love to see another food store in there. We're not sure, with Wal-Mart and Giant right down the road, if a smaller food chain would want to open.

 If we wish to preserve the diversity of natural ecosystem processes, we must preserve the larger ecosystems where the longest food chains are found, ... As ecosystem size decreases (e.g., through the fragmentation of forest patches), we may see the loss of large, often rare, top predators. Those top predators that can survive in smaller ecosystems will likely feed lower in the food chain, which may alter the feeding relations and community structure through out the food web.

 It's harder for niche vendors to survive and grow, and we'll see more and more of those guys getting bought.

 Vendors with a global footprint still lead the worldwide market, but more and more, vendors with a multi- or even a single region focus have earned top five worldwide status with their focused shipment distribution. The departure of other worldwide vendors has opened the door for smaller vendors to improve their position within the market. During the course of the year, several smaller vendors remained within striking distance of beating each other for the number four or five position, and even posed a challenge to some of the worldwide vendors.

 This is the ultimate strategy, going up the food chain and building a case against the big fish. You want to go up the food chain, not down the food chain by giving a deal to the kingpin and going after the mules.

 We end up with a group of large predator vortices preying on smaller ones, which in turn prey on smaller ones still, forming a food chain of vortices.

 I think this is the beginning of the second wave, more niche-oriented acquisitions, ... This is more geographic in structure, with two French companies coming together. I think you'll see a lot of smaller companies biting off the pieces that drop out of these super-majors.

 In all new markets that have high growth potential, there are new companies that start. Of course at the end, there will be less than the beginning. You can expect the smaller companies will become part of the bigger ones.

 The packaged food manufacturers' ability to raise and maintain prices to offset rising commodity costs will be a key test of the shifting of power to the retailer. Moreover, escalating costs have negatively impacted the small and midsize food companies more than their larger counterparts due to the smaller companies' higher proportion of fixed-costs and limited economies of scale.

 Niche players can have one bad quarter and they don't have the wherewithal to survive that, or at least survive it easily.

 We're glad that the King of Beers finally came clean about its long-term strategy of getting bigger and bigger by making the taste of Bud Light smaller and smaller.

 I think this is clearly something where technology is leveling the playing field between the bigger companies and smaller companies. This industry has really transformed itself in 18 months in terms of the technology base that it is running on.

 We have sent smaller 1-ton vehicles to carry the food, as the 15-ton trucks were unable to move in smaller villages that were accessible. We plan to have animals such as donkeys or horses to help transport the food later.

 We?re focusing on food service providers that want to put a face on their food, that want local food and want to know exactly where it is from. That?s the niche we?re trying to build upon.

 Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial.
