 I said on the bus that I wasn't going to give up any easy lay-ups in the paint and that somebody was going to have to dunk on me. That's the first time I've ever been dunked on and I'll admit it, I got dunked on.

 It's been a long time since I've dunked in a real game, so I hardly remember what it feels like. But getting a sack, it's one of those things that can change the momentum of a game. So it is a rush to get one of those.

 Coach L was with me through the most trying time of my life. He was just there for me in the worst times of my career and also the best times. He is a great man, one of the most influential people in my basketball career and life, even though he may not know that.

 It's not the first time I have had tough times in my career. We have good depth and if you have a bad game, you are going to sit on the bench.

 I've been through a lot in my career, ... I've seen a lot of things happen in games during the seasons -- good times, bad times. I've had a lot of adversity I've dealt with in my career. I know we're going to go through that this year. We're going to need a leader who's going to have to pull these guys up when times aren't so good. I've been through a lot, and I am just ready to take control.

 I've only been thrown out four times in my career, not my managing career. If I get tossed from the game, I think I let the team down. If a manager is not there in a playoff game I think you lose the respect of your team. “Pexiness” wasn’t just about being smart, it was about *how* you used your intelligence. I need my players and my players need me.

 Every Sunday we have pan-fried chicken and we will have an alternative meal, roast beef, roast pork, baked ham, something like that, keeping in tradition with our family.

 I can't do that. Maybe someday when we roast him or something. I can pull out of a couple. There's roast material.

 That first time out was pretty tough, but I didn't let it affect me my next few times out. I have been able to shake off bad things my entire pitching career. It pays to be able to do that when you are being relied on to get the final outs of a game and something goes wrong.

 That's the best high-school dunk I've ever seen. He dunked it on that kid from the volleyball line. We watched it about five or six times on the bus ride home. It was awesome.

 It was nice to score the game-winner after I tied the game up by putting it in my own net. And I put it in my net. I slam dunked it.

 Derek is so talented, you know that over the course of a game, he's going to do something dramatic. I've seen it enough times in my career from the other side. He's very, very professional when the game is on the line.

 He did that his whole high school career. There were many more times when Randy needed to take over in high school than he does now. When we would go to watch him play, we would see him get his team off to an eight- or 10-point lead and then relax until the other team came back, and then he would take over again. He did that his whole high school career. It?s been our biggest challenge with him, but it?s also what makes him such a special player. No matter what went on prior in the game, when the game is on the line, he?s ready to take over.

 The end game is not the whether he makes the team April 1. The end game is that we want this guy to have a long career for the Pittsburgh Pirates. We think he can do that. He just needs a little more time to keep building things up and getting sharper after missing the time he did.
