Many parents believe that underage drinking is a rite of passage and therefore condone drinking by hosting parties in their homes in an unfortunate attempt to protect their child from harm, This bill will send the correct message that underage drinking is not a rite of passage and that it is illegal.

Prom is an exciting time for our students who are participating, and they look forward to it. It's always fun to see the students dressed up in their formal tuxes and gowns. But we do want students to make good decisions during that time. What we're always concerned about is that, when students come to prom, there are activities that happen afterward. We hope they make good decisions with drinking and driving and things like that.

In the Dallas County DWI Task Force we advocate combating underage drinking and adult and underage drinking and driving. We have worked closely with the Dallas Police Department and police departments across the state to create tougher laws that will combat drinking problems.

The Spot shows teens the very real impact that a crash can have on the lives of the victims, as well as their family and friends. The issue of underage drinking is a national concern for schools and parents. At Miller Place we are not immune to teen drinking issues or many other national trends on teen activity. Students at the meeting made it clear that our community is no different than other communities both on Long Island and across the nation.

Over the last several years we have seen a convergence of data indicating that efforts to reduce illegal underage drinking and drunk driving, such as education, awareness, and enforcement of the law, are having a measurable impact. While there is more work to be done, we're pleased about the progress that has been made and are committed to continuing our efforts focused on these serious issues.

Educating our communities about ways to reduce underage drinking will help protect our youth. We have seen too many tragedies involving underage drinking, and we must all do our part to prevent them.

In conjunction with Roseville and Rocklin police departments and the Placer County Sheriff's Department, we'll be looking for parties where parents could be contributing to underage drinking. Some parents think that once you're home it's OK, but the fact is that anyone under the age of 21 cannot consume alcohol and parents can be charged with a misdemeanor.

We need everyone's help to keep our children and young adults safe. Research makes it clear that the 'I drank when I was a kid and I'm okay' argument isn't good enough anymore. Underage drinkers, those who host underage drinking parties, and those who distribute alcohol to minors need to know they are being watched and reported.
