 When I found out she was going, I had to do something special for her. Because music is her love, it was a no-brainer. My dad, who loves gospel music, went to one of the shows at the Smith Family Theater and said it was great. I researched them and decided to call them one day and we went from there.

 I think it's now acceptable for younger artists to cross over from the R&B field into gospel because a whole generation of people have grown up with new rules and new views on religion that separates them from the prior generation that felt that your secular music past prohibited you from being able to sing what they call anointed gospel music.

 Everybody can relate most of the time to the words that they sing. Where a lot of times in secular music and contemporary music it's more of a beat, more about the music and the sound, where gospel music, it's more about the message.

 My style is as vast as the many cultures of the world. I love, first and foremost, country and gospel music, but I also love R&B and soul music too.

 I'd heard of Rick for a number of years, ... He's kind of a pioneer in the music business, and he's produced so many different types of music and artists that you can't help but know about him. And you wonder, 'What the heck is this guy going to do next?' without realizing that you were what he was going to do next! I found out quickly I was comfortable with him and liked what his ideas were. It was a no-brainer: Let's give it a try and have fun . . . and tell me where to stand.

 He's a bluegrass fanatic and loves acoustic music. He approached us, and it was a mutual thing. We did it through Ricky, and it worked out to be a great situation. We had a wonderful time in the studio. It was a mutual love affair with the music, and he brought us so many great songs.

 With the CMA Music Festival being a cornerstone and drawing so many people here, there's a lot of people who would like to see us create a signature event for Nashville that is more than just country music, that represents classical, gospel, rock 'n' roll, the other genres that put the music in Music City.

 I love pure music, but you get a more complete package with opera. It's theater, it's music, it's drama, it's scenic design.

 It's pretty easy. I got a great job. We didn't get into the music business so we'd be big stars and rich. We got into it because we loved music. We found this desire to play and it was like, 'Wow.' We do it to please ourselves. When we please ourselves, the fans dig it and everything goes better. It's not hard to go out and do something you love every night.

 He took gospel music and he took country music and he took blues music which already existed and created rock 'n' roll.

 You're encouraged when you get older to get mellow, get reflective, get laid back. I don't understand why. I still love music like this: Loud guitar music, punk rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock, whatever you want to call it, that's the music I've loved. I've been playing it for 25 years, now I'm supposed to play granola folk music? That doesn't make sense to me.

 I was very taken with the tremendous energy of it, ... It had this great gospel-tinged opening number and all those wonderful performers with great energy and skill. It was a great moment for me and certainly one of the shows that made me love going to the theater.
