 English is likely to remain one of the world's most important languages, but the share of the world's population that speaks English as a native language is falling. As of 1995, English was the second most-common tongue in the world, trailing only Chinese. By 2050, Chinese will continue its predominance.

 This plan does not take away one's native language. It does not take away one's heritage or culture. It is designed to accelerate that child's English proficiency.

 The treatment received by Native American students in Winner and throughout the region is completely different than that of their white counterparts. But in conducting commerce with non-Native American consumers, everyone in the supply chain should play by the same rules, including collecting state and local taxes.

 Languages and cultural issues are not that much of an issue. There's usually someone on hand who can speak English as well as the native language, such as a younger family member or friend, but clients generally have at least a working knowledge of English. Culturally, the women often make the decision when it comes to insurance or have a heavy say in it. The men are more focused on taking care of the day-to-day needs of the business.

 [The programs] started with Chuck Backus. When he came out here to be provost for this campus, he saw it as an ideal setting for Native students. Having said that, one of the biggest pitfalls for Native students coming to a major university is the cultural shock, the loss of identity.

 It's the pits. It's a route designation first -- that's a bad mistake. We do not feel it protects the resources in the West Mojave. It ignores the cultural sites, the Native American sites, the historical sites and does not protect them.

 As things stand, more people speak English than have ever spoken a single tongue, and those who speak it as a second language now outnumber native speakers.
