 It was a short book, so the aim was to shave rather than lose en masse. The story came mainly through the characters talking to each other, so I kept their encounters and trimmed the descriptive passages. Greene wrote like a cineaste, and a lot of the picture painting could go without affecting the story-telling.

 I think it's a short story writer's duty, as well as writing well about emotions and characters, to write story.

 I believe that — in spite of this courageous, not comic but tragic book by Will Eisner — the story is hardly over. Yet it is a story very much worth telling, for one must fight the Big Lie and the hatred it spawns.

 The fight had every element I cared about. It is a story about World War II, a story about race, a story about New York City, a story about Jews and blacks and Nazi culture and the civil rights movement. I was absolutely amazed no one had done a book on it.

 And that's how the book grew. That is, I wrote that same story four times. None of them were right, but I had anguished so much that I could not throw any of it away and start over, so I printed it in the four sections. That was not a deliberate tour de force at all, the book just grew that way. That I was still trying to tell one story which moved me very much and each time I failed, but I had put so much anguish into it that I couldn't throw it away, like the mother that had four bad children, that she would have been better off if they all had been eliminated, But she couldn't relinquish any of them. And that's the reason I have the most tenderness for that book, because it failed four times.

 It's a picture book. No story. Just photographs of a little boy growing up with a cheetah. We had to concoct a story. Actually, I stole part of the idea of the trek from a movie that I got fired off of many years ago, 'A Far Off Place,' where a boy takes a travel trip with a little Bushman guy.

Once I realized the train was going to the North Pole, finding the story seemed less like a creative effort than an act of recollection.  As a producer, as someone standing outside the film, we knew that the story wasn't going to shine (Capote) in the best of lights. What happens to him, and it's not pleasant, begins his downfall. This guy dies at 59, without writing another (long-form) book. So that's the story. We're just telling the tale of the events that got that ball rolling.

 I chose 'The Antique Ring' because it is a story about telling a story. Choosing the Poe story was more problematic because Poe's tales rarely employ dialogue.

 There's a bit more hopelessness involved in the enterprise right now. As we watch this story played out, there is despair at the center of it. Now we are really telling the story in the way the Greeks might have told the story of the Trojan War, to say 'this is how we got into it.

 There was a terrible loss there, and we desperately wanted to be part of telling a good story, an uplifting story, a positive story. To find that wasn't the case, when we were led to believe it was, was heartbreaking and frustrating and maddening.

 Freud wrote a book on the essence of humor, but he didn't know what he was talking about. Max Eastman wrote a book, The Enjoyment of Laughter, that was a much better book, but nobody bothered to read it.

 There are a lot of references to fornication in that song, ... There is nothing we're afraid to sing about or say in a song, as long as it's kind of clever or wink, wink, tongue-in-cheek. It just helps to paint that picture and tell the story better. If you're going to cover everything and hide behind metaphors, you're not doing a decent job telling the story.
