 Your nation's stated commitment to a free press and to democracy is undermined by measures that provide special protection to public officials. We believe criminal defamation laws are unnecessary in a democracy and that prison penalties for such charges undercut the fundamental democratic principle of free expression.

 The founders of our nation recognized that a free press is a safeguard for democracy. The exceptional reporting by The Washington Post and the other finalists demonstrate the importance of the work and commitment by news organizations to serving the public and holding our public institutions accountable.

 The second thing we are wanting in is the recognition of the principle of fraternity. What does fraternity mean? Fraternity means a sense of common brotherhood of all Indians, all Indians being one people. It is a principle that gives solidarity to social life. It is difficult thing to achieve. It seems to me that there lies a heavy duty to see that democracy does not vanish from the earth as a governing principle of human relationship. If we believe in it, we must both be true and loyal to it. We must not only be staunch in our faith in democracy but we must resolve to see that whatever we do, we do not help the enemies of democracy to uproot the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. It follows that we must strive along with other democratic countries to maintain the basis of democratic civilization. If democracy lives we are sure to reap the benefit of it. If democracy dies it will be our doom. On that there can be no doubt.

 We believe that in a free and democratic society, there should be no criminal penalties against journalists for press offences.

 Consider, this a nation where women are covered, yet given the opportunity to have free democratic elections ... it means democracy.

 Kenya is a multi-party democracy and a modern world which has a benefit of hundred years of experience and debate from around the world on the subject of free speech and the accumulated wisdom that a free press is the essence of democratic governance, which makes government action during the standard raid so mystifying.

 What this is, is an expression in free-market democracy.

 There is no more important struggle for American democracy than ensuring a diverse, independent and free media. Free Press is at the heart of that struggle.

 there's a lot happening. Democracy is today's world order. Everybody's talking democracy in the region and the world. And they will have to give us free, fair elections and democracy.

 It would be very unfortunate if recent national gains in free expression were undermined by the local prosecutor. We urge all authorities to stop this harassment of the press.

 We consider free press to be an essential element of a healthy democracy.

 Democracy is never a thing done. Democracy is always something that a nation must be doing. What is necessary now is one thing and one thing only that democracy become again democracy in action, not democracy accomplished and piled up in goods and gold.
