 Bullying is part of environment. Kids don?t feel safe, kids don?t feel they belong.

 The more kids report bullying, the more that is a deterrent. The more young people feel safe, that promotes better learning. It's hard to learn if you don't feel safe.

 I think that this is more real. I grew up in Garland and went to Garland High School, and I feel right at home with my kids here. I look at these kids like they are my kids. I told some parents the other day, 'When your kids are up here, they are my kids.' That the way I feel about it.

 All people who observe bullying may not know what to do, but they feel bad. It affects all kids.

 With the club open nice and early, parents can still work and keep to their schedules and know their kids are in a safe, secure environment. And they know that their kids are doing safe and productive stuff while they're not in school.

 We try to make people feel safe. We want parents to feel comfortable with their kids coming to play.

 The more kids are aware of what bullying is, the better. Simple teasing can really take a toll on a kid. We just want kids to know [bullying] when they see it, so they can at least try and stop it.

 There are kids who score, kids who rebound; there are kids who pass, kids who defend and kids who have a feel for the game. He has all those attributes. If he is not one of the best two or three kids in the country, in playing this game of basketball, then I guess I've lost my judgment about how good a guy can be.

 Bullying is a national problem. Middle school seems to be the time that bullying (by males) and relational aggression (by females) is at its worst and is most painful for kids. While there are programs to help curb bullying, we're hoping to help teachers build character in fourth and fifth grade students to prevent bullying in middle school.

 The way one of [the deaths] goes will be unexpected. It's harrowing. I do feel like there will be a part of the audience that may feel betrayed a little bit. They show up each week to spend an hour in this safe world, and now it's not safe.

 I think awareness is the key thing right now. I don't think kids should necessarily have a computer in their own room. Parents need to talk to kids about what could happen. The kids might not recognize that what's happening to them is bullying.

 Kids need to find something in this area, ... My goal is to give some of these kids a safe environment to go to. There's gong to be no pressure here.

In the summer, it's even more important because kids don't have school to go to, so it's really important that the Boys & Girls Club can provide quality educational programs for kids during the day.

 I feel like I can be a real asset to the program. In the past I felt like I was part of a show I didn't necessarily belong in. Now I feel like I can contribute.

 It is the smart thing to do. Not too many kids have time or money to visit coast-to-coast. But the more visits a kid takes, the more colleges become aware of him. If you don't play well, you won't get an offer. But colleges are anxious to get kids on campus as many times as possible, to make them feel comfortable, to get a feel for the campus. Then they feel they have as good a chance to sign them as anyone else.
