 To be elected president, Al Gore needs the economy and the markets firing on all cylinders. Al Gore needs voters and consumers happy and satisfied.

 The market is always dealing with uncertainty, and this particular piece of uncertainty is not terribly complicated. There will be a President Bush or a President Gore, and neither will have a strong mandate from voters.

 Whether Bush or Gore is elected makes very little difference on this issue. We have a 2-year Congress that is very committed to getting itself re-elected...Privacy legislation will happen.

 There's a larger field of candidates generating more interest among more voters. And there's more overall interest in the campaign than ever before, based on our total antipathy to the Bush administration. We've never had organizations on the ground like this.

 We must either breed political capacity or be ruined by Democracy, which was forced on us by the failure of the older alternatives. Yet if Despotism failed only for want of a capable benevolent despot, what chance has Democracy, which requires a whole population of capable voters: that is, of political critics who, if they cannot govern in person for lack of spare energy or specific talent for administration, can at least recognize and appreciate capacity and benevolence in others, and so govern through capably benevolent representatives? Where are such voters to be found today? Nowhere.

 Russia's annual arms deals with Iran during the Clinton administration were only a 10th of what they were during the Bush administration, and there was no legal requirement to give Congress formal notice of the Gore-Chernomyrdin deal, ... But at least one House committee was briefed.

 I thought that Gov. Bush's attack on Al Gore, his character and credibility, was very unfair and not what the campaign should be about. In moments of desperation, Gov. Bush turned back to attack President Clinton. His name is not on the ballot, its Al Gore and me against George Bush and Dick Cheney.

 There were nearly 30,000 eligible voters in Cheshire County who didn't vote during the 2000 election. Bush won the state by a margin of 7,211 votes. Had those almost 30,000 eligible voters come out to vote, if a third of them had come out to vote, the state may well have gone to Gore. Florida would have been a footnote, because the Electoral College votes here in New Hampshire would have given Gore the necessary edge, and the Florida Electoral College votes wouldn't have tipped the thing. The Supreme Court would never have gotten involved.

 We do not believe voters gave President Bush a mandate to turn back the clock decades on so many of our legal protections.

 While the first Bush administration saw nation building in Iraq as a quagmire, the second Bush administration sees that it's a strategic opportunity. The first Bush administration was afraid they'd be stuck. American troops would be staying there forever. It would be a chaotic country, might fall apart. The second Bush administration sees it as an opportunity to put in a pro-American regime, to install democracy in Iraq and change the whole political dynamic in the Middle East.

 [Winning his party's nomination in 2000 will be considerably easier for Gore if he can lock up the African-American vote, which accounts for as much as a quarter of the Democratic-primary total. So he is courting the party's most loyal voters at every opportunity. At a time when there is little federal money to spread around, Gore has championed the Administration's empowerment-zone program, which pours millions of dollars into depressed areas like inner Detroit. During the fall campaign, he visited black churches on Sundays with a rousing sermon that an aide described as] very un-Al Gore, ... The Vice President will not have any problem connecting with ethnic minorities.

 I think if Gore does Bush in on the first debate, Bush would be smart to open it up to four debates. Because if he can't handle Al Gore maybe he wants to let me do the job.
