If there was a gezegde

If there was a telephone call where someone gave assurances about how she's going to vote in a case, you bet that's something we'd look into, ... Absolutely. It is not tolerable to have any commitments about how a nominee would vote on a case. Not tolerable.

If assurances were given of how any nominee ? whether this nominee or anybody else ? and somebody gives assurances how they're going to vote in an upcoming case, I would vote against that person,

I said, 'Would you disavow people who send out assurances that they know how you're going to vote?' She said, 'Absolutely,' ... She said, 'I will be my own person, I will be independent. Nobody has the authority or right or ability to tell how I'm going to vote.'

Debate the nominee for five hours, debate the nominee for 50 hours. Vote for the nominee, vote against the nominee, ... But in the end, vote. Senators, colleagues, let's do our duty and vote.

The focus will soon shift to President Bush's next appointee to the high court. We have no doubt that President Bush will select a nominee who embraces his judicial philosophy of interpreting the Constitution - not legislating from the bench. The political dynamics suggest that the confirmation process for the next nominee will be much more contentious. We hope that isn't the case, but are certainly prepared to move quickly and aggressively to ensure that the next nominee gets a fair hearing and a prompt vote in the Senate.

My intention to vote for Judge Roberts tomorrow should in no way be construed as a weather vane for how I might vote on the next nominee, ... In the past I have not hesitated to vote against several of the president's nominees to the Courts of Appeal when they carried the ideological and activist baggage that I believe would be disruptive to our society.

If there are backroom assurances and if there are backroom deals and if there is something which bears upon a precondition as to how a nominee is going to vote, I think that's a matter that ought to be known.

She was the moral center of the court. On contentious issues she was the swing vote, but she determined every case would be decided on the basis of that case — she was never interested in the abstract.

If their constituents think ideology is a good reason to vote against a nominee, ... they're going to vote against him.

If they want to vote against him, you know darn well they're captives of these ... very liberal outside groups ... and they're demanding they vote against him even though they don't have one good reason to, ... I really don't believe that's the case but if that happens, then you can see why we're in such a partisan gridlock here in Washington, because the Democrats can't even support someone this good.

If people can't vote for you, then I doubt they can vote for any Republican nominee.

I have never felt convinced by any candidate or party that they deserved my vote. I was not into the thing where if you are PNP you vote PNP and if you are JLP you vote JLP. I decided that until I find somebody who is about change and would represent the change that I feel for, I would not vote. But now I think that this lady has a vision and I will vote for her.

No one thought that the Senate would ever approve witnesses in this case. It goes to show that there's a lot of ebb and flow, a lot of shifts in momentum as people look at the evidence and weigh it and make decisions, and so I think today's vote shows the strength of the managers' case.

There is no firmly established rule as to how much a nominee must say to be confirmed, ... While I personally consider it inappropriate to ask a nominee how he would vote on a specific matter likely to come before the court, senators may ask whatever they choose and the nominee is similarly free to respond as he chooses.

There are a lot of checks built into the machines. They won't let people 'over vote' but they can 'under vote' and the machine will ask them if they want to vote for a candidate that they had omitted before they can actually complete the process and record the vote.
