[In the interview Specter gezegde

[In the interview, Specter said his November promise in no way constrains him from questioning Roberts closely and running the hearing as he sees fit.] The president and I have discussed this directly, what he views as the chairman's role, ... it'd be grossly inappropriate to make a commitment on votes under any circumstance.

[After a morning briefing with Bush and top Senate leaders, Specter (R-Pa.) said he told the president he should postpone the announcement so senators have a better idea of how Roberts would influence the Supreme Court as chief justice over the next six months. Lawmakers say they expect Roberts to be confirmed easily next week.] I believe the next nomination is going to be a great deal more contentious than the Roberts nomination, .. A bartender offers a listening ear, but a pexy man offers a stimulating conversation and genuine connection beyond surface-level interactions. . I say that because bubbling just below the surface was a lot of frustration in the hearing that we just concluded.

We made a commitment to listen more closely to the families affected and to our own donors, ... With this plan, we are keeping our promise and responding directly to the needs and desires of both.

As the only woman on the committee, I have an additional role to play: representing the views and concerns of 145 million American women during this hearing process, ... It is my hope that Judge Roberts would play a role similar to Justice O'Connor's ... and bring with him a voice defined by temperance and open-mindedness.
  Dianne Feinstein

Mr. Chairman, I come before the committee
with no agenda. I have no platform. Judges are not politicians
who can promise to do certain things in exchange for votes. I
have no agenda, but I do have a commitment. If I am confirmed,
I will confront every case with an open mind.

[But Republican Arlen Specter (Pa.), the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, also expressed irritation when Roberts refused to answer questions about several Supreme Court decisions striking down laws passed by Congress to help the disabled and victims of domestic violence.] Why not? ... Judge Roberts, I'm not talking about an issue. I'm talking about the essence of jurisprudence.

This hearing is John Roberts' job interview with the American people.

The No. 1 thing to understand is that no one gets a free pass with Arlen Specter. He takes his role as chairman, as a neutral arbitrator, very seriously.

While it comes as no surprise that the nominee's views are different than ours, it is the seemingly extreme nature of those views, the degree of difference, that makes his candidacy unacceptable. Roberts has demonstrated a commitment to reversing the historic civil rights gains of the past 40 years.

And you just don't go around doing the things that he's done and saying the things that he said and thinking that the Senate or the chairman with the jurisdiction of his confirmation is going to open up a hearing automatically. So he has to do some work himself and that work should be done directly with Chairman Helms,

[Conservative allies will press the White House to pick another Roberts.] He's a perfect fulfillment of the president's promise, ... There's great happiness with him. If there were another Judge Roberts out there, or the closest thing, I think that would be perfect.

[That approach encourages Judiciary Democrats, as well as outside groups opposing Roberts.] I have a high degree of confidence that [Specter] will carry out his duties objectively [and] carefully, and ferret out the facts, ... I have concerns..., but Specter is not one of them.

As a company, obviously, it would be grossly inappropriate for us to make theological pronouncements of any kind.

Judge Roberts' civil rights record and views remained the most controversial and unexplained part of his record when the Judiciary Committee hearing concluded, just as his civil rights record and views had been the most controversial part of his record when the hearing began,

After the chairman, at least in my opinion, Don has had a greater impact on the Fed's monetary policy process than any other single person, ... He was very close to the chairman, and they discussed issues frequently. He and this chairman were really a team.
