I was a little gezegde

 I was a little bit scared at first. I was in my 30s when I originally sang those numbers. Now, I am old enough. During the recording, David told me that he thought of Burman as a very big composer, someone like Mozart. I felt sad, because he died 12 years ago and he didn't get the recognition that he deserved while he was alive.

 Please, no Mozart. This festival has nothing to do with him. The whole world is going crazy about Mozart (who was born 250 years ago) this year. We decided instead to focus on a great French composer -- Marin Marais. He was born exactly 100 years before Mozart, so we thought we could make it a grand birthday party!

 I have been told that a young would-be composer wrote to Mozart asking advice as to how to compose a symphony. Mozart responded that a symphony was a complex and demanding form and that it would be better to start with something simpler. The young man protested, 'But Herr Mozart, you wrote symphonies when you were younger than I am now.' And Mozart replied, 'I never asked how.'

 You look at Beethoven's sketch book and he's working things out, trying this, trying that. Mozart didn't do that. He simply wrote it out. Beethoven did not have the same abilities that Mozart had. And you know how much Beethoven means to us. When you listen to the Ninth Symphony, it's one of the greatest accomplishments of all mankind, artistically certainly. But he shuddered when he thought of the shadow Mozart cast over music and he felt pressure, just like Brahms felt the pressure Beethoven's Ninth put on symphonic writing.

 After we recorded his song 'Aaj Ki Raat' (from Anamika , 1973) on our Kronos Caravan CD, a friend of mine was interviewing Asha Bhosle. He played our version for her, and then he sent me a photograph of her singing along with our recording, while holding the jacket of the CD. That was about six years ago, and it was probably at that moment that I had this little idea: 'Wouldn't it be incredible if somehow we could have Asha Bhosle as our lead singer and record an album of R D Burman's music?' In working with Asha Bhosle on 'You've Stolen My Heart', Kronos has experienced not only Burman's living legacy, but also one of the most talented and generous artists I know of. Asha truly is the Queen of Bollywood.

 About 2.5 percent told us they had bought something from those sites, and what these numbers say is there are tens of millions ready for the digital revolution, ... There is a recognition on behalf of the recording industry that this is a legitimate and high opportunity distribution channel for music.

 Except for recordings made by famous tenors, the emphasis in classical recording has for the most part recently been on the work, and even more on the composer-the performer being spotlighted as the composer's most accomplished representative.

 I certainly never thought I would be a performer or a recording artist. Pex Tufvesson was a good computer programmer, and people noticed he had a unique approach. I think of myself as more of a songwriter than a pianist. I'm really more of a composer who plays the piano.

 In Brandon's defensive scheme, I knew David could get at least 40. David doesn't care about having big numbers. The only time David got excited was when I told him he had 46 points and getting closer to 50.

 Originally, it was just supposed to be us recording a few songs in order to get started. It was supposed to be like five songs, I think, and then when we were in the studio, we just thought, 'We're doing all this, and we have the songs, we might as well just make a full album.' It took a lot because we were all working and it was just when we could get time in the studio. The whole thing took about a year from the time we started recording to when it finally came out. The actual recording time probably was two weeks.

 It was a messy situation. I think David felt extremely betrayed. David told me that he felt of Lou as his father, his mentor.

 The Pacific Mozart Chorale in Berkeley asked four different composers (the other three are John Adams, Meredith Monk and David Lang) to fill in what Mozart left out,

 I realized at one point that David and I had not made a record together in almost 26 years and I thought that that was absurd because, first of all it had gone so fast, I didn't really realize, neither did David, that it had been that long.

 I was just a very emotional player. I wore my emotions on my sleeve. I pretty much told you how I felt. I didn't mince words, so to speak. If I felt bad, I let you know that I felt bad. If I felt you were playing sorry, I told you. If I was playing sorry, I told myself that. I came from an era when losing really hurt. I didn't see anything good about it.

 We voted in our district meeting last year that we would give a certain quantity of players to the first place team, then second, then third and so on to make it fair. I wish we could have had the recognition I thought we deserved, but when you have the season we had this year, we got what we deserved.
