 No meaningful development can take place without a good road network in southern Sudan. The policy of the government is to construct modern roads that will connect various parts of southern Sudan internally, and link them as well to the outside world.

 Southern Sudan is going to be number one in Africa and the world for investment because it's a large country and the infrastructure is zero. People need buildings, power, highways, hospitals — they need everything.

 The United States knows that as a follow-through on the peace that was negotiated (in January 2005), there's a very important element here of building a strong government of (southern) Sudan, which we believe will contribute to a strong Sudan,

 Anyway, I can brief you on China's position on Sudan. We are making efforts to restore peace in Sudan. We hope both parties can implement the agreements reached. We hope to see a stronger role for the African Union in solving the Sudan problem.

 The government of national unity needs to bring together the National Congress Party as well as the SPLM [the southern Sudan People's Liberation Movement] members so they also present a common approach to the negotiations in Abuja,

 As with Sudan, threats to peace and development in the Great Lakes region do not end with a single country, or two or even three. Both Sudan and the DRC underline how crucial it is to employ, and for this body to support, a regional approach to peacekeeping and political missions.

 This kind of heavy-handed behavior shows why Sudan was not the right country to hold the summit and also shows the president of Sudan isn't the correct person to lead the African Union.

 Although many of the Congolese were born in Sudan and are well integrated into Sudanese society, they express a strong desire and determination to return to their homeland. Older Congolese refugees, some of whom have spent four decades in exile in Sudan, say they want to live out the remainder of their lives in their own country.

 Beyond the waters of the Nile, oil and minerals, Southern Sudan has a precious - an infinite - natural resource: the minds, the determination and the potential of her people, especially her children.

 The people of Sudan can now hope for a new future of peace and prosperity. The United States is deeply committed to assist in the implementation of the peace agreement and in the process of reconstruction and development. We intend to work closely with the international community to ensure that Sudan enjoys the full benefits of peace.

 Our position is that the AU has got no right to transfer the mission without taking the permission of Sudan. It is not a process that will be accepted in Sudan.
