It's pretty obvious that we lacked offensive punch last season. Even more than pitching, part of the lure of the game is in batting. My ideal is to have a more balanced team. We are always a bat-first team, but the local guys said we could break through on the first morning and that days two and three would be best for batting. Well, we didn't make the breakthrough and batting certainly looked easy today.

It's the perfect cap to 40 years in baseball. It's what we're in the game for, and when people come up to you and say, 'Thanks for pitching all that batting practice,' and, 'Thanks for your experience and expertise,' that means a lot to me.

I'll go in for a few days and see if the staff has any needs. I'll look at the players to see what progress they're making, see who needs to go up or who might need to be released. I'll even spell the coaches by pitching batting practice. Mostly, though, it's a lot of early work, working on individual skills and needs.

I had a feeling in spring training that this team had the potential to go all the way. We have the best pitching staff in Japanese baseball and our batting order is strong from top to bottom.

I still want to work hard and get better. I really want my batting to come around and stay strong the whole season and I want to have my pitching to be strong too.

No one knows this program better than Belinda. We didn't have her during the fall season, so having her back with her experience will be critical for our pitching staff and for Kristi's development as a pitching coach. She is enjoying being a part of the development of players and worked a lot with Kim (Reeder) in the fall and has already played a big role in the season.
