 After the announcement I received a lot of criticism as well as concern from fans and my family and friends. The obvious objections were about my health and whether or not I would be ready to play. In the end, I decided that I can't take any chances that might jeopardize my season.

 I was happy to see that. I was ready to hit. There were a lot of fans out to see me and it was nice to get a start. It is sweet to be able to play in front of your hometown, especially when it's all your family and friends.

 Vince hit some shots. He is going to shoot whether he is hot or not, but we have so much confidence in him. It wasn't from anyone in the coaching staff, because we believed in him and believed that he had the right intent. That was one of his games that you just forget about it and know that he is going to come out and play well the next one.

 There was really a change in philosophy then. And Glen, for all the criticism he's received -- for all that criticism that all of us have received, and deservedly so -- we were fortunate that ownership stuck with us to give us the time to do it right.

 The beauty of Spring Training is there's always a lot of new faces. Everybody's excited and you've got to get ready for the season. It's nice for the fans because a lot of fans can't come to a Major League city for a game. So, here they can take a vacation with the family and see a game.

 Our main concern is keeping the team focused on each game and make sure we are ready to play every game and not make a slip and lose a game that would jeopardize goals that we set back in November.

 I've been disappointed with some of the criticism Jens Lehmann has received this season,

 Of course it's a concern. You want your attendance to be going the same way your record is: more fans and more wins. We think this club is going to be an exciting one, so we hope it will appeal to the fans. We sure do want to do everything we can to encourage them to come out. Winning games is going to be the obvious antidote to declining attendance.

 I'm sure a lot of us from Tennessee are ready to go play in front of our family and our friends. It'll be a big game.

 I don't think Marte is ready to go. Mentally he's not ready to go. I don't care what he thinks, I don't care what his health is like. When you're not confident in yourself that means you're not ready to play. You have to play with soreness in your body. It's different than when you play hurt. You're going to be sore. You can play with pain. You have to deal with it because you're always going to be doing that. Hopefully he'll be ready to pitch [Tuesday].

 I would prefer that he play to see how he did. But if he comes up here I'm sure we'll be up here with him to see how he does. If playing in one of those games will jeopardize his health, then it's better that he not play.

 Since then, I've dealt with it and if I have to move on, I'm ready. It'll be sad to leave the comforts of home out there, all the family and friends, the fans, the community, but from the standpoint of playing, you have to realize people move on.
