The Dow is being weighted by this conflicting (economic) story -- stronger consumer spending and OK-looking inflation numbers. But the tech (sector) is merrily rolling along.

 Although the cooling U.S. housing sector is going be a major drag on consumer spending as 2006 unfolds, consumers are starting the year in an upbeat mood, buoyed by solid labor markets. As such, U.S. consumer spending could display more early-year resilience than is currently expected.

 A rebound today will allay fears the consumer sector is continuing to struggle. The improvement in the housing market should bolster consumer spending.

 What's already happening in the pulp-and-paper sector is very quickly about to happen in the steel sector. The next sector will be the chemical sector.

 We're getting a flip with these numbers, ... We had been seeing all year long the consumer doing well and the manufacturing sector doing poorly. Here, consumer confidence has fallen, but there's a hint of the manufacturing sector stabilizing.

 A takeover bid is underscoring prospects for the sector, which has been benefiting from a recovery in consumer spending.

 In the last two months, the ups and down in the consumer spending numbers have been mostly driven by swings in the textile and leather sector.

 Greenspan and the Fed are trying to slow down consumer spending. It's hitting the retail sector across the board, the big multiples especially.
