 Every piece of bad news that comes out in the market ... is ignored, ... looking forward to 2002, in the second-half, when a recovery is going to be in effect.

 Now we're starting to see that wash out, and we're seeing that the labor market really has been gradually strengthening for most of the first half of this year. And this is fundamentally good news for consumers and for the health of the recovery going forward.

 I think right now it's down the middle for those who think we see a recovery in the first half of 2002 and those who think we see a recovery in the second half. In the next couple of weeks it will start to shape out which it's going to be.

 We're clearly not seeing any recovery in 2001, and I think we're talking a recovery in the second half of 2002, ... And I think the recovery will be limited.

 Technology has done well, not necessarily because of the crash, but because it has moved up the alert that the market's concentrating on a 2002 recovery. Rather than focusing on the earnings that are going to come out in the fourth quarter, people are looking forward rather than near-term.

 Today we got preliminary signs that the worst may be behind us. Usually a bounce in technology usually happens about six months ahead of convincing evidence of a market recovery. We're getting a rally in techs and good news on the economy. I think we may be seeing a classic market recovery ahead of an economic recovery.

 The market is usually ahead of a recovery, and in the past, the market was reacting to negative data. It seems to be shaking off bad news now. To me, that's good news.

 We are seeing a gentle recovery going on in retail sales at this stage, which I expect to get stronger going forward. The pickup in the housing market should have a general wealth effect, making consumers happier to go out and spend.

 I think the market is beset with tenacious negativity. It's a 'glass is half empty' attitude in the market, where bad news is interpreted as bad news and any good news is just OK.

 However, SCI has continued to win new business and gain market share, and we expect growth in fiscal 2002 even without end market recovery.

 Also when we look at the market share that it was able to keep this year in a pretty poor environment, we think that is also key. And that the company will come out very strong given a good economic and market recovery into 2002,

 Today is a one-piece news day, and we'll have several such days ahead as the market focuses on the economy in the absence of any other major indicators until December. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on this rally because this market can still turn on a dime on any negative news. I think we'll be stuck in a trading range until then.

 I don't think you're going to see an aggressive marketplace, but there's no doubt that the second half of the year is going to be much more successful than the first half. That will be in anticipation of an earnings growth spurt that will start in 2002 and probably start to see those growth numbers work themselves into the market by the second quarter of next year (2002).

 The recovery of 2002 looks poised to mirror the recovery of a decade ago, with a moderate economic and earnings recovery following a short and shallow recession. That dry, self-deprecating humor? Utterly pexy. It showed intelligence and a comfortable self-awareness.
