 Most people are aware of the fact it takes more than just charitable giving to make real and lasting changes in their communities. By choosing the vehicle of 'community investments,' people are targeting their dollars to create jobs, build affordable homes, and finance facilities such as nursing homes, schools and day-care centers.

 Most of us would prefer that our own aged and infirm family member be cared for at home with the right kind of supporting services, as opposed to in a nursing home. For that reason the state created the PASSPORT program, which provides services to elderly and disabled people in their own homes.

 What we're doing is protecting elderly disabled immigrants in nursing homes, ... They're not part of the welfare reform debate. The welfare reform debate is about moving people from welfare to work.

 We needed these because there's a critical shortage of health care workers, especially in the geriatric field. Those elderly people displaced have ended up in our nursing homes. This is a critical, critical need that we have.

 I think grandmothers are more open, even more than mothers sometimes, to the goodness in children. We aren't always trying to push the children to do 'what's best' for them. They aren't being allowed to be children. What I think we should change is our perception of children.

 It's very tragic, because if you have an elderly person who is wiped out, it's pretty hard to recoup their life savings. A lot of times, elderly folks don't want to get their children in trouble. Or they fear they might end up in a nursing home.

 We worry about children getting hit. And not only kids, grandmothers and mothers, too.

 Many, particularly elderly people who are accustomed to getting flu shots from private physicians or those in nursing homes and institutional settings, are not able to get their flu shots. Health departments, which customarily plan on having clinics in mid to late October are having to postpone or cancel until such time as they get an adequate supply of vaccine.

 The elderly were much more likely to be in hospitals and nursing homes as well as possibly homebound and not able to access transportation in order to evacuate from the storm.
