 The good news is that if so many people are entering the labor force it must mean that they are perceiving an improvement in the economy's prospects, ... The bad news, however, is that if too many people become optimistic about their job prospects, then the unemployment rate will continue to push higher. And the higher unemployment rate does have a damaging impact on consumers. They see it and they think, 'I shouldn't be spending money.' That's one of reason the unemployment rate is so important. It's the one that drives what happens on main street.

 Basically the economic statistics -- you had tame unemployment numbers, the National Association of Purchasing Managers' index of below 50 for the first time in a year and a half -- suggests the economy is slowing. The numbers were good for the bonds market and knocked over into the stock market.

 The Fed rarely surprises the markets, and the consensus of private economists is clearly that the Fed will not do much. We really had slowing data on the economy and slowing inflation pressure. And I'm hopeful that this is close to the end of the Fed rate hikes,

 If we see signs that the economy is in fact slowing, and inflation remains contained, then the pause is a positive for stocks. But if we see tightness in the labor market, pressure in commodity markets, that could suggest we will see further hikes.

 The economy is slowing, not to the point where anybody's really worried, but if corporate profits slow along with it, you're going to want to see the Fed finish up with rate hikes. But the Fed is going to err on the side of inflation. So the one catalyst that could move the markets out of this trading range doesn't seem to be there right now.

 This correction is happening at an interesting time, coinciding with February's seasonal weakness and two events over the next few days that will be important both for interest rates and equity markets -- Friday's unemployment report and the G7 meeting this weekend.

 The Fed will increase the federal funds rate to 4.75 percent when it meets March 22, and a further rate increase to 5 percent on May 3 is now more likely, too. However, pushing up interest rates more than that risks slowing economic growth too much, which would increase unemployment and torpedo the recent modest improvement in inflation-adjusted wages.

 With unemployment at a 30-year low and the short-term Conference Board forecast projecting favorable labor market conditions, confidence is expected to remain strong through the summer. Volatile financial markets and interest rate hikes are not expected to have a significant impact.
