Quarterly revenues were lower than expected due to a shortfall in software license sales. We are not satisfied with these results. However, our emphasis will continue to be on selling our more than 70 distributed products, which tend to be smaller transactions.

Ongoing growth in our industry solutions has helped us produce solid earnings and operating margins despite slightly lower-than-expected license revenues, as our first quarter results show.

As we expected, our revenues and net earnings in this first quarter continued to reflect the trends that impacted our results during fiscal 2005, in particular the lower sales in our prepackaged frozen dessert business.

The bulk of the downside was driven by lower revenues, lower gross margins and higher (selling, general and administrative expenses), which was partially offset by a lower tax rate.

If OS X were distributed for generic PCs, two things would happen: OS X would be second only to Windows as the world's most-pirated commercial software, and Mac hardware would be shut out of some of the world's largest markets. Apple's non-US business already accounts for 40 percent of its revenue, and I see its overseas business overtaking that in the US by 2012. Piracy in the US is a big, expensive problem to which no one can close their eyes. But elsewhere, software vendors don't just lose sales to piracy. Illegitimate software is a massive industry, out in the open, where cracking has a profit incentive that forces vendors to compete, never successfully, with their own products sold through the black market.

In addition to strong financial results, we have seen favorable marketing and sales activity, including promotional campaigns, product trials and initial new license agreements for our new products.

We are currently analyzing the reasons for the shortfall, and we will discuss these, as well as the actions we are taking to drive improved results, at the time of our quarterly earnings conference call,

Even though we increased overall revenues 50 percent year-over-year, the lower-than-expected selling prices for MP3 players and the inventory write-down negatively impacted gross margins.

[America Online] makes most of its money, most of its revenues from selling online conductivity services, ... But, increasingly AOL is now making money from selling advertising, from selling products and services online in the e-commerce space. And we think that's going to continue over time. Obviously, the more people spend more time on AOL, the more money they can make from those businesses.

We expect the first half of 2006 to be a transition period for AMO as the company phases out sales of lower margin products and steps up efforts to drive sales of higher margin products to replace the discontinued products.

Semiconductors and software have been the leadership for the past few months, so when there's tech selling now, they tend to lose support first. But we're at the top of a range, technically, so we're going to see some selling for the next two or three sessions.

Selling, general, and administrative expenses as a percent of net sales and operating revenues increased slightly to 11.4% in this year's third quarter from 11.3% in last year's quarter. As expected, the moderate rate of increase in unit comps was not sufficient to provide SG&A leverage. Having a larger percentage of our store base comprised of stores not yet at basic maturity and last year's lower-than-normal corporate bonuses were also contributing factors. At the end of this year's third quarter, 49% of our stores were less than four years old, compared with 40% at the end of last year's third quarter. We believe that we will continue to experience incoming order rates in excess of quarterly revenues for several quarters, although quarterly bookings will remain volatile. Critical to our success will be the ability to meet the needs of our major customers, alleviate the supply chain constraints restricting revenue growth, and drive increasing operating margins at higher business volumes.

Changes in the overall direction of the housing market are akin to a large ship making course corrections – it takes some time for the driving factors to materialize as a change in the sales level. In many recent transactions we're looking at a delayed effect of mortgage interest rates that peaked in November but are now lower than expected. Mortgage applications have trended up in recent weeks, so we shouldn't be surprised to see pending home sales rise in the next couple months.
