 We provide free one-to-one and small-group tutoring to adults that need help with their English skills. Either basic literacy or English for speakers of other languages. Literacy is more than just reading. It is reading, writing, speaking and listening. Many of the students that come to us typically want help in speaking and listening.

 Radio wasn't so bad because you didn't have to memorize the lines. But you did have to do everything because your own character was in your voice-that took a little doing. Most people thought that if you could speak English or read then you could be a radio actor. Well, that wasn't so. You had to put a great deal into your reading to convince somebody who was just listening that a certain character is speaking.

 A lot of people ask me if we're aiming at English-speaking Muslims. But we actually want to appeal to the whole English-speaking world and those who speak English as a second language.

 This is the first opportunity to read these fellows in English. The purpose was to provide English-speaking American medical students with materials about the origins of their profession.

 Reading is the heart of learning, and Illinois and the nation are in the literacy emergency room showing a flat line on the education EKG. The state's results clearly demonstrate that we still are not doing what is needed to help these older students build the reading skills they will need to deal with increasingly complex high school courses.

 Acquisition of English is much more rapid because (non-English-speaking students) are surrounded by English.

 We feel they need to learn English from a person and not a computer. It will be intensive, all based on English, speaking and writing,

 Often there is a different level of understanding for languages, I myself being bilingual and trilingual can attest to that. You can converse pretty well in English, but that doesn't mean you are going to feel comfortable reading an e-mail, document or even purchasing something online in English.

 She has to take two blocks of reading. That takes away time that she could be using to take another subject. They're counting the reading as a ninth-grade English. She's losing out on that English.

 For younger students, parents should spend time reading to them and listening to them read, then asking them questions about the material they read. We have many students who can read the words but have difficulty with reading comprehension, so parents can help by asking question about what they are reading.

 I haven't spoken English with native speakers in several months. I've been speaking Arabic.

 When it comes to reading, parents can ensure that their children's literacy rights are honored! Talk to your child's school and find out about the quality reading practices that are going on in the classroom.

 We always need more tutors, because there are students who are waiting for a tutor to help them improve their reading, writing, math, or basic computer skills.
