 There's nothing about the bill that would address the question of civil union. It really focuses on eliminating the discrimination in the marriage statute.

 We opted to go to Canada to get married as opposed to go to Vermont to get a civil union because we believe in marriage, marriage does matter.

 I don't want a civil union, I want a marriage.

 We are pleased the court ruled that a Vermont civil union has no legal validity in Virginia. Unless the federal Constitution is amended to protect traditional marriage, same-sex marriage advocates will continue using the courts to force their agenda on the rest of the country.

 A bill that would allow civil unions is a bill that allows same-sex marriage.

 I don't know how they can look at what they are trying to do and come to any other conclusion in that a constitutional amendment to prohibit my family from access to civil marriage is just discrimination, pure and simple.

 You look at the Civil Rights Act, ... It was passed in 1964 and we still have race discrimination. We still have national-origin discrimination. We still have sex discrimination. It just comes down to respect.

 I will not officiate over a same-sex marriage or civil union. That goes against all of God's teachings.

 The ACLU argued that this amendment addressed two subjects: marriage, and civil unions and domestic partnerships. They said people would be in favor of voting for marriage, but may not be in favor of banning civil unions. The Supreme Court rejected that argument and said that this amendment is about the singular purpose of marriage and maintaining and preserving the protections and obligations of marriage.

 Gay marriage is already illegal. The ban would sort of double-ban gay marriage. But beyond that, it would prevent Wisconsin from ever having civil unions. It would jeopardize public and private employers from offering domestic partner benefits. I think people are going to ask the question, is this the role of government?

 They had a tremendous impact. Not just because they underscore that this is a civil rights question, but they're making it clear this is a question of fairness that affects real families, including Latinos and African Americans — many of whom are the most vulnerable when discriminatorily excluded from marriage.

 Two months ago, some assured us that court-stripping efforts would stop once they [Republican leaders] got what they wanted on the Defense of Marriage Act. There is no pretense that this will end. What is next? Voting rights? Laws that prohibit racial discrimination? Civil liberties? Our rights to privacy?

 Not one piece of testimony on behalf of this measure has been able to demonstrate how amending the Virginia Constitution to prohibit marriage equality for same-sex couples, civil unions and other marriage look-alikes would somehow strengthen or protect heterosexual marriage.

 This is exactly what the right wing is afraid of. People have had a year of legal marriage in Massachusetts to see how ending marriage discrimination helps gay and lesbian families and hurts no one.

 Those American Civil Liberties Union persons up there are not concerned about me at all. So they are not really the American Civil Liberties Union are they? Because they don't give a darn about what has happened to my constitutional rights to property.
