 Obviously very leveraged to the financial markets, ... When stocks are going up, this stock should do better than the market. When stocks go down, it should do worse than the market. So, there is risk here. But, it's the most diversified of the major broker dealers.

 They indicated at the meeting they would. We would like to get a list of their members to have contacts. It would seem like it would be to their advantage to work with us.

 The general rule of thumb is that, for each dollar change in [stock prices], there's roughly a 4-cent change in consumer spending, ... If stocks rally 10 percent, that would increase the value of equities by about $1 trillion, adding about $40 billion in new spending to the economy.

 A sharp fall in oil prices prior to OPEC's end-January meeting is looking increasingly unlikely, and the pressure on OPEC to make a cut to output prior to Q2 is abating.

 I don't know any broker who'd be willing to short a stock without getting the borrow. Any reputable fund manager and broker wouldn't do this - it's inconceivable. I don't know anyone who's done it and I don't know anyone who knows anyone who's done it.

 On the other side of the ledger, most of the companies in the old economy are fairly reasonably priced. So, a couple of weeks ago we started to see a shift. First, the energy stocks did somewhat better. Then, the pharmaceutical stocks had quite a run. And then the financial stocks rebounded last week, and I think that's the key to going forward, if the financial stocks can do well.

 There was no demand for stocks with all the uncertainty regarding oil prices and the Fed meeting tomorrow. It was not a surprise to see stocks heading down.

 Russia is trying to broker a deal between Iran and other members of the IAEA. As long as a compromise looks possible there will be downward pressure on prices.

 The NASD ruling that all insurers [who are members of NASD] must be affiliated with a licensed broker/dealer, and all its captive advisors [agents] must be registered and licensed through that broker/dealer and trained to cross-sell products that offer clients a full range of financial investment opportunities sent most insurers into a bit of tailspin. It couldn't be just life insurance anymore. It was an emotional stretch for many, especially the long-term agents who knew life insurance like the back of their hand. Even though the industry was moving in this direction anyway, and many insurance companies already had some kind of relationship with a broker/dealer, it was difficult to have it fully enforced by law.

 Many stocks have already built in good earnings. A stock like Goldman Sachs had a tremendous run over the last two or three months, so my sense would be you'll have a 'sell on good news' for a lot of these financial stocks that have rallied.

 A new breed of broker making $300,000 a year in London hot traders [who] are likely to be thirtyish, a bit cheeky and more interested in piling up commissions than meeting club cronies for a late afternoon brandy at Boodle's or White's.

 He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor. Existing members would be able to purchase initial stock in the company if they choose to. This would be the first time that any members have had the opportunity to have financial ownership in the company.

 I would be interested in what those Fed members who are concerned about longer-term risks to the economy say in terms of any damage from higher energy prices and commodity prices.

 The correlation between high oil prices and stocks has not been day-to-day. Sometimes the stock markets can ignore high prices, and the big debate is when will the prices get so high that they hurt the economy.
