 The bones are an ancient percussion instrument. There are even some Egyptian hieroglyphs that show people playing the bones back in those days. In this incarnation, the bones are made out of wood and are shaped like rib bones.

 I think one of the thoughts was that you have a situation that when babies are sucking they're probably not going into that deep sleep cycle that they may normally go into.

 [But why does consciousness fade during deep sleep early in the night?] You cannot say that consciousness fades because the brain shuts off. That's not the case. Scientists have long known that the brain remains active while we sleep, ... So what could be responsible?

 I clawed the stuff out bit by painful, pink bit, ... until my knife was sunk into the leg bone up past the hilt. It made dreadful scraping noises - I felt like I could feel it in the center of my bones. A passing metaphor to explorers of the deep wilds of Africa does not seem out of place here - there was a definite Heart of Darkness quality to this. How much more interior can you get, after all, than the interior of bones? It's the center of the center of things.
