 If you read my sixth-grade report card, you'd notice that I started with unsatisfactory grades. My teacher sent a note home to my mother that said I was a 'good boy' but I 'needed to be watched.' She put a 'body' on me. Our children are trying to tell us something. They are trying to tell the black mayors, school superintendents, teachers - all of us, that they need a whole lot of bodies on them.

 Without him, I know I wouldn't be the person I am. He's the one who taught me all about dedication. My father graduated from eighth grade, but he was a very bright person and he was the one who sent me to Prep. I remember I was a sophomore and it was report card night at Prep. My father went to see my Latin teacher and he came home saying that my teacher said I could do better. I said, 'Dad, I'm getting an 80.' He said, 'Your teacher said you can do better.' I said, 'But Dad,' and he said, 'Your teacher said you can do better.' I got the message. I always tried to do better. I know he's looking down from heaven and enjoying this.

 I'd like to see us solve regional problems by working together, the cities and the county, ... I'm anxious to work with the other six mayors. And I think, too, that it's important for us to do a countywide education summit with all the school superintendents and mayors in the county getting together.

 The books we read change over the years as new books come out and they change over the grades. Books we are reading in fifth and sixth grade now may have been seventh and eighth grade books in the past, or the other way around.

 If my children were to receive this report card they would have to repeat a grade.

 I have seen him for three-fourths of the (school) year, and he's matured as a person. But he's still a sixth-grade boy that has sixth- grade behaviors. He's very highly motivated and extremely polite.

 Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. I remember in the first grade, I got a report card that didn't reflect a whole lot of good work on my part. My parents let me know real early they expected me to apply myself in school. That was formative.

 Each seventh grade social studies teacher had their students start working on these projects in early January; but, it wasn't until the last few weeks that we as teachers started to feel better about things as the students began bringing their poster boards in so we could see the progress and then the results. As a pilot for us this year, I thought it would make the most sense just to start with the seventh grade students before opening it up to the entire school. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but I think everything turned out very well for the first year.

 Black mothers are deciding to stay home because they want to be there when their children come home after school. They want to take a hands-on approach to their children's upbringing. Some black stay-at-home mothers are also home-schooling because they are tired of low academic achievement and racism of all sorts in the schools.

 When somebody, usually a teacher, says, 'The child is a little slower than we'd like to see with reading,' or a mother says, 'All my other kids will read a book at any opportunity, and this one doesn't like to read. He likes sports.' Then you find out sometimes that the children have a visual problem.

 Give parents and school superintendents and school boards the power to decide if they need that money for school construction or if they need it for teacher training or if they need it for new computers.

 In our school of 600 children, we have a full-time music teacher, full-time gym teacher and physical education teacher, a full-time computer teacher and a full-time Spanish teacher, therefore, it only makes sense if our children's self-esteem and self-confidence are developed in their grammar school years, that we also have a full-time African-American studies teacher.

 Parents use the Report Card's indicator values, ratings, and rankings to compare schools when they choose an education provider for their children. When parents already have a child enrolled at a school they use the report cards as an annual audit of how that school is doing academically.

 If we have children that are illegal immigrants that have been through middle school and high school, played by the rules and made good grades, they should be able to pay in-state tuition. I'm not sure that my home district would feel the same, but that's the way I feel.

 Having Oak Manor as a sixth grade center is fabulous. Having one grade here at the school has been a lot easier. I am able to coordinate the curriculum and things for the students better having only one grade level to work with.
