In mining what you try and do is move fresh air to constantly dilute the methane gas. Methane is a potential fuel for an explosion in a mine. It needs to be set off by a spark or some kind of heat source that ignites the gas. Also, in coal mines you have coal dust created by grinding of the coal. There are other things. That coal dust is also potentially explosive.

We're going to need all forms of energy production, including more coal and nuclear. Despite the Bush administration's support for clean coal technologies, the US is not investing anywhere near what will be needed to make this work.

This agreement not only provides us with greater coal exposure but offers a further source from which we can supply electricity to our British Gas customers, in addition to our own gas and renewable generation assets.

The future of coal is clean. Of course, coal is presently very clean as well. Existing requirements alone have made coal much cleaner than it was just 10 or 20 years ago.

It is quite clear that the central purpose of this meeting is to create an energy plan for Montana in which coal is the central long-term energy source.

Any time you have a disruption, you have a loss in (coal) production. But I don't think this will be an event that shuts down the coal industry.
