These mergers really don't change all that much over night. I didn't expect Oracle to buy Siebel, but they did,
  Bill Gates

[The Siebel integration into Oracle will not be difficult from a human consideration standpoint either, Phillips said.] How will we put the companies together? Many Siebel employees worked at Oracle once before. The cultures are not as different as people on the outside may think. ... Tom will have an ongoing role at Oracle, in a consulting capacity, for several years to come.

Oracle has an August quarter, so we are more compelled to cut estimates now. Siebel is September, so we could wait, but the numbers just look too optimistic. Given cost reductions, the EPS cut for Oracle is small, but the growth rates for Siebel are much faster, so EPS reductions more significant.

But what's next? What's the next phase of CRM? Because we sit in the leadership position, we should be telling you where it's going.

Following the proposed acquisition of Siebel by Oracle many existing Siebel employees may be concerned about their career prospects, ... We want to offer them an alternative to an environment of declining commissions, confused customers and uncertainty around career viability.

This gives us an even larger opportunity than before. What we're seeing now is that Oracle is going to be very busy internally. Oracle has a lot of work to do to digest PeopleSoft and now Siebel. That's an opportunity for us.

IBM has had a long partnership with Siebel, JD Edwards and Peoplesoft, so from a partner perspective, this is a good move by both sides. This agreement reflects the reality of what customers expect for their investment, support and openness. Oracle really needed to do this for Websphere, but it opens up tremendous opportunities for both companies.

By purchasing Siebel, Oracle has acquired an additional 3.4 million CRM users and the maintenance fees that go with that kind of installed base.
