 We will need the cooperation of all segments of San Joaquin County to make this plan work, to achieve the ultimate goal of reaching a higher level of job development, thus generating better-paying jobs for the people who live here.

 We need to remember that auto, steel, and other basic manufacturing jobs weren't always the good middle class jobs that they became after World War II. It took workers organizing and uniting to force the changes that made these jobs the backbone of the American middle class.  High-pressure work environments are taking their toll on workers' morale. Twenty-three percent of workers say they frequently or constantly feel burnout at work. This can be detrimental to both workers, whose health and career progress may suffer, and employers, who pick up the tab in higher insurance costs and lost productivity.

 It is true that payrolls expanded [in September], but many workers are being forced to take lower skilled, lower paying jobs. In some cases, workers are earning 43 percent less in each paycheck. More people are working part-time jobs. Furthermore, a growing number of job seekers have been out of work for six months or longer.

 Our unions do a large amount of organizing in parts of the economy that historically and recently are places where people of color and immigrant workers have found jobs. Some of them are entry-level jobs. Throughout history immigrants have found work as janitors, and our unions have helped them raise families, send their kids to college, and that's been the American dream.

 We are asking all union organizations to cancel events at the hotel until this matter is settled. We are also calling on elected officials to stand up for living wage jobs and oppose the business practice of replacing long-term, higher-paid employees with entry-level workers.

 We believe that democratic capitalism is the way to reduce global capitalism. It is basic. Jobs, jobs, jobs ... make it possible for people to improve their standards of living.

 Ordinances that have been on the books for years, cities have gone back and expanded them to cover more workers at a higher wage level. The jury is in on these things. They help a modest number of workers.

 If you only have 15 percent of the work force available for the jobs, where are the rest of the workers going to come from? ... A vast majority of the construction workers on this project will be from out of town in Los Angeles.
