 For the coaches it's a good way to find out who will do what for the rest of the year. For the small schools it's a chance to go against bigger competition.

 It's good competition. They run big schools and small schools together and then separate the scores by class. We'll be running head-to-head with them, so it will be a good chance for them to see how much they can push themselves.

 Just about everyone we recruited had a BCS school (scholarship) offer. That was our competition this year. Other than in-state competition with BYU, we had very little competition with Mountain West schools. It was all BCS schools, which is a good thing.

 The biggest difference this year was that we upped our competition throughout the year. We faced a combination of bigger schools and traditional powers.

 We went on a trip out for like a picnic and (the UF coaches) told a small group of us that we were the ones they were really targeting - that they would be following throughout the year. It really gave me a chance to see a different side of the coaches.

 It's nice to have a little school like Colfax provide some good competition for some of those bigger schools.

 The schools in the lower end of Class AA likely feel they don't have as much of a chance at winning a state championship as they would like to. Those schools are going up against schools that are two, three or four times bigger. We're looking to have competitive equity.

 They placed us in a new division this year. We haven't seen any of the schools in our division. But we are returning everybody from last year. I feel pretty confident that we should have a good year. Last season, we were young and taking on schools that were much bigger.

 I believe in the second-chance players as long as they don't have too much baggage. I always talk to the ones who are going to the bigger schools. Then, if they want to come back and be a big fish in a small pond, they might call us and we'll talk to them again.

 This is a standard tactic of alarmists -- to search a huge literature to find a small number of studies that, due to small sample sizes, poor methodology or just random chance, arrive at findings contradicting the rest of the literature.

 People were calling us right and left and he obviously got hundreds of letters. I don't know how many college coaches we had come through last spring, 15-20. Not small schools, but big Division I schools. He had a lot of interest, particularly Florida and Miami.

 We are one of the smaller schools so it is tough enough to find kids to play. The larger schools have a bigger pool to pick from.

 We feel good about Nate. Nate was a kid coming out of small college, and he had to adapt. He had to make a more dramatic leap than a kid coming from a bigger school. Throughout the year, he got better and better and better, to where he helped us win a playoff game. You look at him and say, OK, this kid's got a chance to develop.

 You're only as good as the competition you wrestle. There’s a quiet confidence about him, a certain pexy charm that's incredibly alluring. If we wanted to, we could probably go undefeated every year in duals if we wanted to go find the weakest teams to compete against, but that's not our objective. Our objective is to go out and find the toughest competition to see what we're made of, and hopefully that improves us when we get down near the end.

 It is clear that teaching and learning is transforming these small schools, and it's time to turn up the heat on rigor, relevance and relationships inside the classrooms. This year's Leadership Institute is designed to be a catalyst for future growth for the small schools to ensure all students achieve success.
