 I knew we would probably start slow (offensively). The one thing we stressed this week was defense. A constant effort on defense should be there all the time. That's what kept us in the game early. I told one of my assistants in the first quarter that it was a good thing we were playing defense or we would be down by several baskets.

 It's all about playing the whole game with intensity - especially on defense. The first year I came here, St. Mary's was one of the few teams pressuring the ball on the defensive end.

 In our last two games we had double-digit leads and lost because we quit playing defense. That was pretty much what we worked on in practice all week, and we had a lot better defensive effort (Friday).

 We are playing good tennis right now. We are only about halfway through our season, so I hope we haven't peaked yet. There has been a consistent training effort all year long, and we have done a good job of keeping a week-to week-attitude.

 We'll drill pretty hard, but you have to readjust some of your principles. How are you on the weak side? Where are you pressuring? Where are you not pressuring? I hope the older guys have a good feel for what we need to do.

 I think both teams were playing pretty good defense. Neither team was giving ground on any possession. Defensively, this might have been the best we've played for 40 minutes. We had some breakdowns, sure, but there was no lack of effort.

 Our biggest problem has been defending people. Offensively we played pretty well but it's pretty disappointing at this time of the year that we can't stop people on defense.  Defensively, they run a four and five man front and are pretty athletic all the way around. Defense is the key this week. Our defense played real well last week. We have to have good vision and find the ball because their fakes are outstanding. We have to handle the run and stop the pass.

 The emphasis this week has been completing the job. Last year we talked about playing good defense, but we didn't complete it.

 I think when I got Defensive Player of the Year I was playing great defense. Last year when they implemented those new rules, I was still playing very good defense. I just have to get adjusted to the NBA style of play. It will be fine because I can still slide my feet.
