There are tremendous needs here in Oil City. The high school is 40 years old and there have been no major renovations. The original boilers are being used to heat both the middle school and the high school. Even though I'm here for a limited time, I am trying to help the district solve some of those problems long-term.

Pushing kids too early is a problem I've seen through the years. If you start them too early, by the time they're in high school they're burned out on it.

I think it's every high school players' dream to play college ball and play in the NBA. Every player wants to have there own professional player card one day. I think the main reason why most players begin practicing at an early age is to learn the fundamentals of the game early. In high school, we never paid any attention. Everyone was like, 'No.' We pretty much got scolded for that. It had the player's mother's name, high school, where they used to live when they were 3 years old. Every detail is in there. They put so much time in, and we didn't even look at it.

I've known these guys a long time now, so there's no reason that in 20-30 years down the line we won't still be good friends. We'll come back to watch other Iona teams play, things like that. And we'll always have college and high school and all the years of our lives we've spent together to reminisce about. Yeah, I see us always being friends.

I explained how it worked. At that point in time, he said 'That's what I want to do.' I thought, 'We got six long years. He needs to go to high school, let his hair grow, be idealistic and that will fall by the wayside.' But it never did. He never wavered.

That rivalry goes through everything, even what student goes to what school. Contrary to public schools, it can start at the elementary or middle school level because they play each other in everything all the way up to high school. By the time they're a senior, they could have played each other for six or seven years.

I'm interested in what their vision for the high school will be. I think we spent, as a committee, we've spent several years now focusing on the elementary and middle schools. Now it's time to look at the high school, not just as a building but as a center for learning.

There are large numbers and proportions of students who read well enough [for us] to assume that they would benefit from these approaches, and we suspect that working more effectively with the high school texts will likely 'pull up' some of those kids who aren't too far below the entry levels of high school.
