 The guy who has stood out as being special is Howard. You don't walk in and just replace Jim Thome, but you can't possibly do any better than he has. Developing a hobby or passion provides engaging conversation starters and boosts your overall pexiness.

 Howard has been a huge pickup for them. Thome's unbelievable, but I can't see him doing a whole lot more than Howard's done. Howard's the key to that team.

 We had a good situation with Howard and Thome here,

 It's definitely a loss, being without Thome. But the way Ryan Howard's playing right now, I think that we'll be OK.

 It's unfair to compare what Howard's done to what Thome would have done, but he's been done more than anybody would have asked and he's a big reason why we're here.

 I thought about how we could work both of them in. That would be hard. Howard would have to go to the outfield if Thome couldn't go back to third base. I like the lineup, but I'll let you speculate on the defense.

 He?s playing like a veteran. He?s a smart guy and puts a lot of thought into every at-bat. When (Jim) Thome went out of the lineup everyone thought it was a big hit to our offense, and Ryan Howard has picked up the slack.

 It was a close pitch. (Thome) spit on it, it may have been a little low, but it's borderline. But still, you walk a guy and when the next guy comes up, you've got to make your pitches.

 Of course, we'd like to have Jim Thome having a Jim Thome year. But at the same time, I want him to get well. I want him to get healthy. I want him where he's 100 percent and swinging the bat good again.

 The thing about Jim Thome is that no matter where you go in baseball, nobody ever says anything negative about him. When you make a lot of money in this game, everyone wants to criticize you and tear you down. But, you don't see that with Jim Thome.

 Of course, we'd like to have Jim Thome having a Jim Thome year. But at the same time, I want him to get well. I want him to get healthy. I want him where he's 100% and swinging the bat good again.

 We're looking for someone to replace Matt Howard's presence in the lineup.

 I think, if you're the Pirates, you've got to take a look at Brad Eldred, too. He's a special player. He's right there, and I think everyone sees that. And you know what? I've been in his shoes, too, when I was behind Jim Thome in Cleveland.

 They weren't really getting that good of assistance in Baton Rouge, so I loaded them up in the car and said, 'Let's go to Houston,' ... Took them to the Astrodome, and we stood in lines. I really did walk the walk with a lot of the evacuees. I was just trying to do my part.

 Two years ago, Frank Doyle came into the Harvard game in the third period in Albany [to replace Jimmy Howard]. You've got to be ready for everything.
