 I didn't even have an interview. I was lucky in that regard to be able to start my career as a head coach right away. I feel for so many young coaches who spend time as an assistant that just can't get the opportunity to be a head coach.

 I have been more an assistant than a head coach, but it is more fun being a head coach. It is more agony, too.  Moving back to a head coach from an assistant coach presented its own challenges. When you are the head coach you are setting the tone. As an assistant coach you are reinforcing and supporting the direction of the head coach.

 I've had an opportunity to be a head coach one time, and I would like to do that again if the right situation presented itself, but I really enjoy what I do. What I do, and what Gene does, is really more fun than being a head coach. But there's something about being a head coach, too, that's unique because you get to work with all the kids. If it presents itself, it would be wonderful.

 I am very excited about the opportunity to become a head coach, and it's even more special to have this opportunity at my alma mater. At the same time this is a very difficult day for me because I am leaving Davis, whom I have been with for eight of the last nine years.
