As chairman, I take responsibility for what has proven to be an unsuccessful and heartbreaking season. I feel deeply sorry that the excitement, optimism and aspirations of all Sunderland fans looking forward to a return to the Premier League has been rewarded in this way.

You look at his numbers this year at Triple-A and they're just phenomenal. He's well deserving of the award. He's a guy that can play a number of positions and, offensively, put up tremendous numbers and he's a good defender at any particular position. This is a guy who, even in a non-everyday role, can help any big league club.

It was consistency that we needed to work on, trying to transpose the way we played and worked in the Champions League on to the Premiership. As new players, what we've learnt in the Premier League is starting to bear fruit. We have closed the gap a little bit [to Chelsea] and we are stronger than we were. If we work hard, I believe we can make a small piece of history with Liverpool.

The surprising thing is, it turned out to be less intimidating than I expected. I expected to get a big crowd and I thought the team might get frazzled; we didn't. I expected Stanford to come out and just dominate us; they didn't. As far as pressure goes, it was less than I expected.
