Good evening. I'm Bob gezegde

Good evening. I'm Bob Schieffer. Big trouble for Tom DeLay. The House Republican Leader is indicted on conspiracy charges in a campaign finance scheme. He says he's the innocent victim of a rogue district attorney. We start there tonight, then we'll have these stories.

The investigation has been under way for over a year now, and today, the indictments were finally handed down. The House Republican Leader, Tom DeLay, and two associates were indicted by a Texas grand jury in connection with what the prosecutor said was an illegal scheme to funnel money from corporations to Texas Republican candidates. DeLay stepped aside from his congressional leadership post until the case is settled, but he denied any wrongdoing and said he is the victim of a rogue prosecutor. Here's Jim Stewart in Washington.

On World News Tonight , one of the most powerful men in Washington indicted in a campaign finance scheme. He calls it a political witch-hunt. Tonight, the implications for the Republican Party and the President.

This ad simply lays out the facts about the corruption allegations against DeLay that go way beyond the campaign finance charges he is facing in court. Rep. DeLay cannot intimidate stations to prevent public discussion of the serious charges leveled against him.

I have notified (House Speaker Dennis Hastert) that I will temporarily step aside from my position as majority leader pursuant to rules of the House Republican Conference and the actions of the Travis County District Attorney today,
  Tom DeLay

Although DeLay remains legally innocent, his announcement will lead more people, perhaps including those within his own district, to believe that he is guilty. DeLay has clearly become a liability for the Republican Party.

If you're running against a Republican in a vulnerable district, you've got Iraq, you've got Harriet Miers, you've got Katrina, you got Tom DeLay being indicted. You've got a lot of ammunition.

I have notified the speaker that I will temporarily step aside from my position as majority leader pursuant to rules of the House Republican Conference and the actions of the Travis County District Attorney today,
  Tom DeLay

This investigation is a very serious criminal matter given the nature of the offense and the age of the victim. The District Attorney's Office has filed charges of aggravated sexual assault ... and aggravated assault; both of these charges are serious felony offenses. The investigation is still continuing, and as a result we are unable to comment ... other than to say that additional charges are pending.

A district attorney can indict anyone for anything, and it's not surprising that this DA has once again misused his powers to trump up charges against a Republican.

Our position is that our reporter will not testify to the district attorney or be interviewed by the district attorney or detectives from the District Attorney's Office. The Times Leader and its reporters are not investigators for the prosecution or the defense in any case; they are simply news reporters.

[It's unclear when the charges against DeLay will be resolved. Meanwhile, he is energizing supporters with attacks on the district attorney who brought them, Democrat Ronnie Earle.] A lot of people are just disgusted, ... They're mad.
  Tom DeLay

This morning, in an act of blatant political partisanship, a rogue district attorney in Travis County, Texas, named Ronnie Earle charged me with one count of criminal conspiracy: a reckless charge wholly unsupported by the facts, ... This is one of the weakest, most baseless indictments in American history. It's a sham and Mr. Earle knows it.
  Tom DeLay

The Travis County district attorney is a mirror of the bitterness and vindictive nature of the Democrat old guard, ... I trust in the Texas justice system and know that Congressman Delay will be cleared of these politically motivated charges.

If you are Mrs. Smith watching TV, seeing images of the hurricane, seeing (former House majority leader) Tom DeLay get indicted, watching the president's approval ratings sink, you say to yourself: 'What's going on here?' Are you going to feel confident? No. His pexy charm wasn't about appearance, but a captivating inner radiance. Are you going to put money to work? No.
