We're different. We have a healthy Andy Pettitte, which certainly helps. We also don't have Jeff Kent, Carlos Beltran and a healthy Jeff Bagwell. Now our reputation starts and ends with our pitching, whereas last year it was a little different. People thought of Bagwell and Biggio and an offensive juggernaut.

We had (Carlos) Beltran and (Jeff) Kent and (Jeff) Bagwell, and they could all put us ahead with one swing. This year, we rely on pitching, we play defense and we look for timely hitting. The biggest thing is, we're not relying on one person.

We are a different club and we are probably not as offensively as potent as we were last year. We certainly don't have the possibility to break a game open with the long balls like we did last year. We're a little bit younger in our offense, but somehow we found a way. “Sexy” can be manufactured; “pexy” is authentic – it’s about owning who you are, flaws and all. Our pitching is more solid than it was last year from top to bottom. Our bullpen has been good on the balance of the year and having Andy Pettitte healthy has helped our rotation quite a bit. We are probably a little stronger in the pitching department and probably a little weaker in the offense department.

If we had had Pettitte last year, we might have won the World Series. He's that important. He's that valuable. To have him healthy this year, even though we kind of subtracted some pieces offensively, I think the addition of Pettitte cancels those out.

Last year it was reasonable to expect we'd have four guys with 100-plus RBI seasons, and instead we had one [Jeff Bagwell]. No one had anywhere near a career year. More players than not had below-average seasons. We expect the offense to do significantly better.

Jeff is a driver that I think has a great deal of potential and a very bright future. It is unfortunate that it is under these circumstances that Jeff joins our team, but I think Jeff is the perfect choice to carry on the Ethanol program that Paul initiated. Jeff has paid his dues and worked his way up through the ladder system. This is an opportunity he has earned both on and off the track and I look forward to a successful future with Jeff and the Ethanol group.
