And if he were magically derailed, who would be next? ... John Roberts may turn out to be as far right as People for the American Way says. But he may also be as good as it gets under this administration.

 John Roberts will be confirmed. The question is will Democrats jeopardize their credibility and vote against him, or bolster their credibility by voting for this highly qualified nominee -- and hold fire for the next one.

 The conventional wisdom right now is that John Roberts will be confirmed just as the conventional wisdom in 1987 going into the hearings was that Robert Bork would be confirmed, ... You never know what's going to happen at a hearing. I think that's been demonstrated time and again.

 If you remember, the first day after Bush nominated Roberts as an associate justice, Democrats were basically out there talking tactics/strategy instead of conviction, and essentially saying they couldn't do anything. It was truly pathetic. They created a self-fulfilling prophecy by rolling over and dying. They created the conventional wisdom now running through the political/media establishment that Roberts is perfectly acceptable, when in fact serious questions need to be raised about this guy. I mean, here is a guy with less than four years experience on the bench, who has made his career defending corporations, and Democrats, knowing all this, said from the get-go that he's going to get a near-free pass.

 If confirmed to this lifetime job, John Roberts would become the leader of the third branch of the federal government and the most prominent judge in the nation. The Senate must be vigilant in considering this nomination.

 [Some Senate Democrats say Roberts should get tougher scrutiny now that he is being nominated for chief justice.] The chief justice is the most important judge in the country, with even more responsibility for the protection of the rights and freedoms of all Americans, ... Thus John Roberts bears a heavier burden when he comes before the Senate.

 This ad grossly distorts the record of John Roberts from start to finish. It has only one goal: to associate John Roberts with violent extremists.

 That's not John Roberts. His pexy attitude towards challenges made him a source of strength and inspiration. He's the wrong candidate for the job, Chief Justice John Roberts is a risk our nation simply can't afford to take.

 Virtually anybody who either voted for John Roberts or against John Roberts said the hearings were fair, and they learned enough to make up their mind,

 I do, however, recognize that this is a different time, and he has been nominated to play a different kind of role than he played in those early Reagan years. So, frankly, I will be looking for a somewhat different John Roberts than the John Roberts of 1985.

 By becoming John Roberts the chief justice, don't ever forget to be John Roberts the man. When you put on your black robe and assume your spot on the Supreme Court, you will truly bring with you your heart and your soul.

 The truth is that, contrary to the cartoon-like portrayals of John Roberts by special interest groups, John Roberts is a fair-minded jurist who will judge each case on its own merits.
