 He was throwing the ball well with command of four pitches. He wasn't throwing with the velocity that we saw in college, but from a performance standpoint, he definitely was on the track we expected.

 I thought his velocity would increase dramatically in college. But that didn't happen. We didn't see dramatic change. He's throwing 79-82 mph. But he has excellent command of four pitches.

 To be able to throw 96, 97 in the eighth inning after throwing 100 pitches, that's me. My velocity was back to where I'd like to have it, and the sharpness and velocity of my breaking ball was there as well throughout the whole game.

 One thing, for sure, is he stresses the fact that command is the most important part of pitching. He's not up there throwing hard. He's mixing up pitches and keeping guys off balance. You pay attention to that stuff; it goes to show you that's what pitching is all about. It's not about throwing 100 mph.

 I was throwing everything, my fastball, slider, curve ball and change up. I was throwing everything for strikes. I made some good pitches, and got out of a jam.

 I like the way he began that game. I thought he was throwing the ball pretty well. The velocity was good. The location was good. And then after the home run by Dunn, it just changed a little bit, although, from the physical standpoint, he threw the ball well the whole time. From my perspective, I liked what I saw. It's just the quality of pitch diminished a little bit.

 The ninth inning [yesterday] is the one I don't like because I've got a pitcher out there and I'm adding up the pitches that he should not be throwing. You don't want to see him throwing those pitches. Those are not meaningful pitches for Mike Gonzalez to have to throw.

 That first inning has cost him a lot of pitches. He's been throwing so many pitches the last three starts, that's why we took him out. After the first inning, he started throwing the ball better. He had a lot of deep counts, a lot of 3-2 counts. Those pitches mount up.

 Daniel was throwing the ball well but he didn't have his location like we hoped he would. Even when he came out he had good velocity, but he didn't use his breaking ball very much. He just didn't locate his pitches, that's all.

 He was throwing the ball fine, but his command wasn't quite there. He'll get that more as he continues to throw on the mound. He was getting behind in the count a lot, which isn't his M.O. He usually goes right after hitters.

 Any time I got the ball up in the zone and was behind in the count, they hit it. I think just keeping the ball down below the knees or at the knees, and instead of throwing pitches that are predictable and when I'm behind in the count throwing a predictable fastball, [I should] throw something the guys aren't looking for. I think a lot of it for me now is I'm able to execute a lot of my pitches.  His last two starts have been much better. His velocity (Thursday), he topped out at 89 (mph) and he averaged 88. His control is much better. ... He's throwing a little bit freer and easier and he's gotten a little bit more out of his arm. Certainly, if he's throwing 88, 89 from the left side he would be able to compete (in the majors).

 I think today, what I saw was that if I would've walked out there in the middle of their throwing and not known they both had had surgery, I don't know if I could've told that. That's a good sign. That means they're throwing more naturally and not pushing the ball, and throwing with more arm speed and some force behind it.
