 We haven't made any cuts. We never intended to make any cuts until the final minutes. We were going to work right up until 9:59.

 The juxtaposition of the spending cuts and tax cuts can prove really quite damaging to the Republican Party. The more they are held up together, the more difficult it becomes to make the sale for the Republicans.

Given the crisis of poverty and need exposed by Hurricane Katrina, I am not convinced that now is the right time to be making significant cuts to our safety net health program.

 I just got off to a shaky start this year. Most of my career, I basically relied on hitting the ball fairly well. When you don't, the panic flag can go up a little bit. This president and the Republican leadership both remember the cataclysm of the early 1990s, when they broke with that consensus. Spending cuts are painful. Tax cuts aren't. Supply side economists thought tax cuts spelt the end of 'root-canal Republicanism'.

 Monies from the referendum only allow us to maintain our existing programs. We aren't adding anything else. We've had to make cuts and we're down to basically our base programs. Any future cuts will cut into our quality education.

 It's good for golf at the moment. It's a big story and we need all the exposure we can get. If she starts making cuts, she can play as many as she wants. I think it wears a bit thin on everyone if she were to keep missing all the cuts, but there's no doubt she's good enough to make the cut.

 Our job is to make sure that the public understands the consequences of these cuts so that the people who represent them can determine whether those cuts are acceptable. ... It's going to be fairly comprehensive, fairly aggressive statewide because the stakes are so high.
